Singer Phil Collins said his life now revolves around the Alamo.
Collins is in town, set to appear at local events commemorating the anniversary of the siege and battle of the Alamo. Though he's mulling the idea of recording a tribute cover album of 1960s songs, he said he's making the Alamo “my main thing” as a collector, history buff and possible author.
“Basically, now I've stopped being Phil Collins the singer. This has become what I do,” he said Monday, standing beside a 13-foot-by-15-foot model of the 1836 Alamo compound that will open to the public this week.
Collins, who is British, said he has “hundreds” of cannonballs, documents and other artifacts from the Alamo, possibly the largest private collection anywhere, in the basement of his home in Switzerland. He said he's collaborating with artist Gary Zaboly on a book about his collection.
His most prized item is a receipt signed by Alamo commander William Barret Travis for 32 head of cattle used to feed the Alamo defenders.
His latest involvement in Alamo history is narrating the introduction of a 13-minute “Alamo diorama light and sound show” at the History Shop at 713 E. Houston St., by the Alamo. Invited guests at a preview tonight will also see a battle site excavation covered with a window on the floor of the shop, which is near the Alamo's north wall, where much of the heaviest fighting occurred.

It is not humid here in San Antonio - hot though - yes, plenty of that! Now Houston - that there’s humid!!!! It just never seems to rain here. La Nina is killing us. Drought is unreal. As to politics, generally Bexar County goes GOP, but this last time actually went Obama.

I was judging it on my trips through the area. We too, in Haskell Co. are having a drought. Dry conditions are normal for us here, but this year is really dry. I can take the heat, but not the humidity. Have lived in the West all my life.
Hottest time I remember is 2 weeks I spent in Barstow CA. 2 weeks spent around July 4th, wheeee! 116 degrees f. in the shade.

I visited once too. I loved San Antonio and the Alamo was awesome.
I’m to much of a wuss to handle the humidity. It gets really humid in Kansas but NOTHING like Texas.
I would have figured thought the only battle Phil knew about was "The Battle of Epping Forest." (One of the best Genesis tunes, ever)
I think there was a hiccup in the system.
I really liked him as singer on the first few post-Gabriel Genesis albums, but he started over-singing right around "Duke."
But as a drummer, he's tops.
I agree that Custer got what he had coming to him but it was too bad he dragged all those other men with him. I have seen the native American shows on TV about the battle and while I found them interesting, they were certainly biased. Not surprising.
Yeah it may be a touch more humid here than West Texas. Depends on the arrival of sea fronts off the GOM. It is so dry that it is depressing. My water bill is going to be astronomical at least until we get the mandatory rationing. El Nino is so much more fun than La Nina. People on the hurricane threads always wonder why we hope we get hit - need the rain, that’s why! The optimal strike is between CCTX and Brownsville, not as populated and the rain would come in buckets.
I agree. Let Americans and really ALL visitors to the Alamo see them.
I wonder how much all of that has cost to ship overseas.

:) In the -very- early 60s.. I still have the photo of my brothers 'n me in our coon skin hats, our long rifles, hatchets, etc. We were in another country; and boy did we look strange playing out our childhood heroes and dramas. lol! I tended to get the optional parts like.. nurse, local native American Indian girl playing negotiator for a truce, and new character Annie Oakley. One photo has us all in pajamas and props..behind trees, shooting from the hip, etc. So, I think the Alamo stuff got sent to us for a Christmas.

I did. I don’t think Phil Collins is crazy. I think it’s cool that he is into the Alamo. I have always liked Phil Collins. I’m also a Texan, and I love the Alamo.
Okay, it seems like I have to spell it out for you since you cannot figure out what I am clearly saying (and that I actually said TWICE).
Phil Collins is not crazy because he happened to like the Alamo. Picking the Alamo is not what makes Phil crazy. Phil is crazy because he sounds crazy by his own statements and it appears he is way overboard obsessed with something to the point he makes ridiculous personal statements that make him sound like a crazy person.
I also said at least he picked a good thing to go nuts over.

As an veteran of the United States Army let me be the first to say, Holy Cow!
I come from a LONG line of warriors. I'm also a student of history. Custer was a pompous, self centered bottom feeder. I use those terms because we are asked not to use profanity here. He was not a hero in my estimation.
Please explain yourself.
LOL, I don’t have to explain anything. American GIs are massacred by the enemy and a major battle lost and your take is that you think the Lt. Colonel in charge was a jerk anyway that deserved it, although you do feel bad about the rest of the GIs that were defeated and then massacred afterward with no American soldier allowed to live.
I wanted them to win that battle, I wanted my guys to succeed with no losses, I didn’t want our wounded to die horribly as they were tortured and mutilated after the battle instead of being treated as POWs.
Which other times when American GIs have been massacred are you so casual about?
I know that you probably didn’t mean any harm by your post, for some reason many people in our society have been led to put the GIs that fought Indians at a lower level than GIs that fought Nazis or in the Middle East.
For instance no one ever takes Malmedy lightly, yet people joke, write humorous songs about, and mock the Americans that suffered massacre at the Little Bighorn.
These attitudes enabled the left in 1991 to rename Custer Battlefield National Monument named after the US Army officer to Little BigHorn Battlefield National Monument to better reflect where modern America’s sympathies lie.
I'm sorry our guys got hammered but you can't change history except in the minds of the politically correct buffoons who renamed the battlefield. The fact is that we lost. Period
I'm lead to believe that you would have approved if the Indian dead and wounded were treated the way ours were. I can't imagine that either. I hope I'm terrible wrong.
