In fact, the Deseret News is only read by Mormons. And of more import, mostly those in Utah only. Many members who live outside Utah, like me, and who do not subscribe to the paper, appreciate public forums like this and people like Restornu because they convey the news to us.

Let it be said that it makes little sense to accuse LDS of a lack of modesty when the stories are reported largely to a Mormon audience. Those who feel by any other spirit than the one that is originally intended, choose to of their own accord, making their folly fully manifest.

I would pay some serious money (in times when money is short) to see a flamewar between the FR holy warriors and some Buddhists.

I didn't know that Deseret News is a Mormon publication until someone pointed it out to me. I never thought it was a big deal. How was I to know that it is part of a conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids?

You guys are friends and allies from many other battles. You know me to be a reasonable sort.

There is something “sinister” going on here, and there is a reason some are fighting it.

I was shocked over what I learned after the primaries when I had time to dig deeper. If you want to know you can mail me.

The DNews is not a Mormon only paper. Yes it's parent company is owned by the Church, but most of it's employ es are non-LDS. Similar to the Church Bonneville Communications, which also owns KSL Television. The majority of it's employees also are non-members. Until recently, the editor of the d-news not even from Utah, and definitely not LDS. This is why there was a recent boycott by so many non-LDS DNews reporters over management changes. They DONT want it to be a LDS paper.

Time will tell.

I personally want to thank you for what you did to this thread. Not only has your true intent been exposed here, but you essentially sent a message to others making the whole program of donating these wheelchairs not worth peoples time and money in effect, hedging against the children that will receive this charity; and to think only because LDS is involved in the program.

Also, KSL’s news director is Greek Orthodox.

"the whole program of donating these wheelchairs not worth peoples time and money"

congratulations on missing the whole point! If you're only doing something for the good press it will give you, DON'T BOTHER. Especially don't you dare associate something like that with God.

Mormon only "largely" has no bearing on those who work for the paper. The paper is largely read by Mormons because non-mormons in Utah, SLC more pointedly, are next to nothing.

By your own words, then it was mostly non-mormons who reported the act of charity, Right? And what does that say for your ilk who are here sending the message that Mormons are tooting their own horn? Spare me.

Only NINE?

Nine Deseret News reporters and an intern removed their names from stories they'd written Tuesday to protest the demotion of two editors and policies they believe are reshaping the paper into a specialized publication catering only to Mormons.

The action came after editor Joe Cannon and managing editor Rick Hall announced Chuck Gates, deputy managing editor, would become a special writer and Julianne Basinger, business editor, would become a copy editor. "Gates and Basinger reportedly are critics of the LDS Church-owned paper's increasing embrace of topics thought to please its mostly LDS readership.

Cannon has said the strategy makes financial sense at a time when most U.S. papers are struggling."

I think you have me confused with someone else. I am LDS, I live here, and I work in the media, so I know what I'm talking about. I was setting the record straight. Salt Lake Proper has a huge majority of non-Mormons. Only the burbs and the rest of the state is red and LDS. SLC is liberal and very often anti-Mormon to the core. The DNews has a large circulation, Mormon and non.

Please take your attitude and accusations someplace else. You'll get no further dialogue from me.

Do you even know how many reporters the D-News has?

Uh, I think I got the point. I said "in effect," which sets apart other ramifications that you did not think of. So, who is really missing the point here?

And you may want to look at sevenbak comments, who so earnestly conveys the fact that the paper is ran by non-Mormons, who, IN EFFECT, reported the story and carrying the mantle of the tooting horn for the church, that you and your ilk tried so desparately to place upon the LDS church.

You protesters may want to have an organizational meeting to get your ducks in a row before you come on spill your cancer on threads like these.

It does not matter if you are LDS or not. You still mischaracterized my post. WHO works for the paper has no bearing upon the audience that reads it-that was my point. You knocked my point off point. There was no record that needed straightened.

And no, I do not live in SLC. However, my son does and my inlaws are from there.

And since I will get no more dialogue from you, I guess I can assume you will be gracious enough to give me the last word?

“it’s parent company is owned by the Church”

and CNN is owned by the saudis. The newscasters aren’t Saudi, and yet we see a pro-Arab, anti-Israel bias from CNN/Time hmm. That’s how it works. They write what they are expected to write.

I didn’t make this about LDS. Others have come along & chosen to make it not about the way it was presented, just as we would do with CNN/AP/whatever, but they want to make it about them. I made several friendly overtures in my first posts, but that has been completely ignored, and I have just been attacked by you “and your ilk”.

I have an issue not with the wheelchairs (which is a good thing) but with the PR aspect of it.

It screams “Look, see how good we are?”. That bothers me and IT WOULD BOTHER ME IF IT WERE ANY OTHER CHURCH AS WELL.

When I was LDS, I showed my never-mo grandfather a news article about something the Church had done. I remember saying to him “See? This proves we are Christians.” His response? “Charity does not make one a Christian, Christ does”.

Then he asked me if I knew why he went to the bank (53 miles away from our farm) every Friday. It was because he tithed and gave all of his donations ANONYMOUSLY. He never just wrote a check.

I have learned to follow his example. I believe that ALL charitable giving should be done anonymously, in the spirit of the verses here. Helping others and serving the Lord is more important than PR, recognition, or tax deductions.

I agree drum up support for good works, but the author is using it to say “LDS good, LDS done this”, the TITLE screams phariseeicalism. This is exactly the kind of thing Jesus preached against in Matthew 6. I’m only saying the author was wrong in their presentation.

Amen Chuck!

I think restornu (her call sign means she thinks there is a "Restored Gospel" which is absolute BS) violates another of Jesus' teachings by posting this claptrap.

Resty - did you get what Chuck said about Matthew 6?

Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2"So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Got that Resty? Or are these words from Christ in need of "restoration?"

And you have know idea what you are talking about.

Why can't the headline be about the good that was done. In the body of the story the group can be mentioned.

Addionally if the Lions Club has bashed what I believe for the last 150+ years, you betcha I would be posting a response.

I forgot to let you know to ignore the ping on this thread. Some folks decided to take a dump all over a good story and it isn’t worth forwarding.
