50,000 "residual" troops left in Iraq: "anti- terrorism operations"
Vanity | Vanity

Posted on 02/27/2009 6:13:34 AM PST by DBCJR

Yesterday Obama announced a new time frame for troop removal with a big surprise. 50,000 troops will remain to do, among other things, "anti- terrorism operations":

"President Barack Obama will announce today that most U.S. combat troops will be out of Iraq by Aug. 31, 2010, though thousands will remain behind to support Iraqi forces, two administration officials said.

Obama plans to leave 35,000 to 50,000 military personnel in Iraq through 2011 to perform duties such as training, equipping and supporting the Iraqi military and protecting civilian operations. Some of the remaining troops would conduct anti- terrorism operations, the officials said. By Dec. 31, 2011, all U.S. troops would be out of Iraq under the plan, they said." Bloomberg 2/27/09

How are "anti- terrorism operations" different from what the "combat troops" are doing?

Could this be termed “The De-Surge”?

So they are going to leave about the same time as when the Bush administration negotiated. And “all” but about a third of them are going to leave? All praise the Obamessiah!

We have been through this before, in Vietnam
And we see it in ineffective UN operations worldwide

Troops assigned as “advisers” will have strict limits on their operations. Any American soldier who participates in “offensive” armed action- or who permits “atrocities” by the Iraqi units they are advising...faces stern review and possible courts martial or- by 2010- the ICC

All volunteers for this mission in mr o's army please step forward....??

the democrats could not force Iraq to become another Vietnam... obama was installed and given a scepter

My DIL will be deploying there this summer. They will be training Iraqi police. Not sure how long they will be staying.

My Marine friends were doing something similar in Fallujah, except it was Iraqi military police and soldiers. Other Marines were overseeing local and regional elections. Their time in the AO was about six to seven months. Army deployment time is expected to be cut from the one year or more it used to be.

I read this differently. These 50,000 troops will be doing “anti-terrorism activities” - nothing different from the “combat troops” he is withdrawing. This is the “De-Surge”

Remember when Democrats bash Bush due to “too few troops” for the invasion/occupation?

3 months of her deployment with actually be stateside before she heads over, so I hope that means less time there. A mom always worries, but moreso with a daughter. I can only imagine what her mom feels. Her brother just came back after more than a year and now she will be going.

Although I have been sending packages to Marines since late 2004, I recently found out that the Marines who relocated to al Asad are very well-off; there’s even a Pizza Hut there. The al Asad exchange is pretty well stocked with personal hygiene items like deodorant, shampoo and sunblock but phone cards, big bags of M&Ms (from Costco), magazines, books and Starbucks coffee are still very popular. If she’s going to be there, it will be less of a hardship.

Also, the Marines are still using the old golf clubs I sent back in 2005. Any diversion helps to pass the time.

I’m not sure where she will be. She is an Army reservist, not sure if the military branches are mixed together on bases. How does that work?

Yesterday, the Obama administration was avoiding the use of the word terror/terrorism.

This won’t help if he doesn’t give them the equipment they need to do the job. Cutting 25 percent from the military budget will pretty much curtail any operations.

Al Asad is a large airbase and is comprised of numerous units from several armed forces branches.
