McDonald's shafts one of their own!
The Daily Change ^ | 2262009 | TDC

Nigel Haskett was working at a McDonalds in Arkansas last summer when he witnessed Perry Kennon, a criminal with a long record beating a woman. Mr. Haskett tackled Kennon, threw him out of the restaurant, and then stood by the door to prevent reentry. Kennon went to his vehicle, grabbed a gun and proceeded to shoot Nigel Haskett multiple times. Haskett staggered back into the McDonalds and collapsed. Haskett has had multiple surgeries and medical costs are at $300,000 and counting.

McDonald’s has denied workers compensation benefits to Mr. Haskett.

"I’m not, it’s the McD’s workman’s compensation company that’s at issue here...and WHY they would deny this....of course there may have been small print."

...Haskett filed a claim with the state Workers Compensation Commission. Misty Thompson, a claims specialist with McDonald's insurer, Ramsey, Krug, Farrell and Lensing, said in a letter to the Commission that “we have denied this claim in its entirety as it is our opinion that Mr. Haskett's injuries did not arise out of or within the course and scope of his employment.”

I think that is just completely inexcusable. To routinely leave those on disability without the help and having to go through a legal battle as well, is immoral. This is one area where I’m hoping the Liberals fix the system.

"to get there before the woman was either dead or maimed...it was a courageous decision."

I doubt it, though this guy couldn't have known it, but the thug and the woman were shacked up, he her baby daddy. So I doubt she was in mortal danger.

This case should be worth at least $10,000 per major publication headline in bad PR alone.

I would venture to say (at least I hope) the WC Commission with reject that out of hand. since when is barring re-entry of someone just thrown out of an establishment NOT part of the scope of employment?

He didn't get shot breaking up the fight, which also would probably within "scope" of employment, but rather while attempting to keep the perp from coming back in.

One of the downsides to unlimited access to firearms.

What a frickin' dumb ass statement. If there was "unlimited" access to firearms the McDonalds clerk would have been armed and defended himself before he would be shot, or the perp wouldn't have even tried to shoot him. Most likely the firearm used was illegally owned and even if it was, was most likely not legally carried. Criminals own and carry firearms in contradiction to the law which proves those laws useless.

Go back to DU or put up a SAR sign next time. It is hard to believe a FReeper could be so frickin' stupid.

I guess you have never read the death rates of women who are beaten(and some men by their women)who eventually wind up dead because of it, and in most cases it is by the "baby daddy".

Well MacD sure has the bad press now. I smart company would have gotten in front of this mess with in 10 minutes. If MacD’s publicity guy should have jumped on it. That would have been worth two hospital bills. Now MacD looks like the bad guys and they will pay a double loss in the Burger market.

Maybe not, but he's right. Everybody, at some point in their lives, needed a good beat down. Even me, even you. Be honest.

Do you mean like the case of the other rampaging “CHIMP” last week. By the time police arrived the damage was done.
