Planning For Survival - How To Get Started
EDSFAS ^ | 02/21/2009 | Free America

It seems more and more people are asking questions on what steps can be taken to prepare for what appears to be a looming crisis, maybe even a breakdown in civilization. This is not a fun subject to discuss, because for most people it represents something that we never thought we would see in the USA.

But the facts are all around us. There is a ever-growing number of people who see the worst of what might happen. And worse, there is an ever-growing list of possibilities that could take our economy to levels not ever seen before. Is it the financial / banking crisis? Is it the ominous threat of a terrorist attack? Or is it a civil war created by an out-of-control government who appears to be over-reaching into individual rights?

The reality is that it could be any of these, or possibly a combination of these and many other scenario's that could play out. Unfortunately, the end result could all be the same. And that is a total breakdown in civilization as we know it, leaving millions of people without access to food and basic care. Think the government will take care of us if that happens? They are actually the ones that have created the mess, so I'm not holding out much hope that they are going to be of any help.

I remember those fallout shelters from the 60s... :-)

I also remember visiting over at an uncle’s house (at the time) and having him take our family on a tour of his new fallout shelter, built underneath his house way down in the ground, and stocked with all sorts of supplies...

Later on, we just all accepted we would be totally wiped out and “lived with it” and forgot about the fallout shelters.

Terrorism factors into it too..I think at this point the government is looking out for the government. In reality if things go south too fast the police aren’t going to be able to protect everyone. Also, when (not if) the government goes broke, where are all the welfare payments going to come from?

We have Iran about to get nukes, we have a government steamrolling towards socialism, we have a large criminal element just waiting to riot and run amok, and a depression looming..talk about multiple threats.

Yeah, penicillin was only first mass-produced during World War 2, and then, afterwards, we entered the phase of medicines for everything, so that has modified things quite a bit.

We would revert back to the “old days” without adequate medicines, if a major disaster happened, like a massive terrorist attack. There probably wouldn’t be enough doctors nor medicines around to treat everyone. Then we would see things as they were in the old days.

Yep, there’s no shortage of “doom and gloom” — and it’s not rhetoric, but real stuff...

My favorite possession is my crossbow.

It is a wonderful weapon. It makes little noise, is deadly. I have a freezer full (compliments of my brother, who borrowed it this winter to kill them)of deer meat. It has a scope, and all three deer were killed just as the sun came up, so it is a decent scope in low light situations. Crossbows don’t need to be registered either, and as long as you have the right sized arrow, you have ammunition.

At one time I was pretty skilled with a compound bow, but carpal tunnel in my right hand made it impossible to pull it. The crossbow is great, just pull a trigger. It can take down an elk, and would be just as deadly against a thug coming at you meaning harm. I can even cock this crossbow by hand if needed.

I live in a rural area (10 miles from the nearest small town). I could live for years on the squirrels here, and have plenty of deer. I also can walk to a lake full of fish.

I have noticed there a 10 times as many squirrels concentrated in small areas in towns and cities. If things got bad, and I was in town, I’d trap or shoot a squirrel asap.

Shadowstrike, I have a deer hide hanging on the wall of my house/cabin. It’s not a trophy, and I didn’t kill it. It is the hide of my brother’s first deer, killed in Louisiana. The reason I am so proud of it is because my (now deceased sister in law) read how to cure a deer hide with the brain matter of the deer, the way the Indians did it before you sent a deer to processors. She cured this hide this way.

That deer was killed in the 1980s. That hide is beautiful. It is a daily reminder that people survived long before they had the means we do today.

my husband uses a compound bow....I used to have one, but never was any good and we sold it....but I saw a lady using a crossbow the other day on the telly and I think I could even use that.....

I would love to go hunt elk with my husband, if it was legal to use a crossbow....

<And now, our population has more assistance to help people from starving completely to death.

My son and I were discussing whether there would be food riots. My thought was that we have food stamps, WIC, and other programs that help people get food, so if things got really bad, more people would go on these programs, which is just what Zero wants.

So far, so good. But, what if businesses refuse to take on government promises to pay? If I give the grocer a food stamp, he expects the government to pay. If the gov’t is so indebted that its promises to pay are no good, then what happens?

I could be wrong, but that is the only scenario where I see food riots. I’m open to other theories of doom and gloom.

Appearently, the Hoover Dam hydro-electric plant could run up to fifty years without any interference from man.

Unless someone puts a 2000 lb JDAM or Paveway through the face of it.

You said — “But, what if businesses refuse to take on government promises to pay? If I give the grocer a food stamp, he expects the government to pay. If the gov’t is so indebted that its promises to pay are no good, then what happens?”

Well, the food stamps of today are by means of a “debit card” and the transaction is done immediately and the store has the money *right now* before you even pack up your groceries. It’s exactly the same as a bank debit card or like a credit card purchase (except no waiting for “clearing” on a credit card).

But, if the government is *totally out of business* — in terms of not even being able to make payments (at all) — then we have no government at all — and we’re in a state of anarchy and we’ve got bigger troubles than food riots — but all out war and rioting for control of little fiefdoms and gangs “running things” in their neck of the woods as the only “government” that exists.

If we go that far (the government not paying out money) then we’re done for, totally...

Don’t know where you live cherry. Up until a few years ago most states (including mine) only allowed crossbows for harvesting game for those with certificates from doctors certifying them as handicapped.

That is changing rapidly. Several states, in the past few years, have now legalized crossbows. You’ll see more of this in coming years.

The reason is numbers of those buying licenses are dropping, and the agencies need license buyers to pay for programs. At one time there was a war between purists (compound bow hunters) who fought the crossbow use. However, studies on the deer harvests where these have been legalized have shown no harm or increase in harvest with increased use of crossbows.

Believe me, states want these legalized, as hunter/license buyers drop, because they are now looking at recruiting more license buyers (particularly women and children). The crossbow and women are a given.

If it is legal in your state, or where you hunt, I’d say get a crossbow. If it isn’t, lobby your state wildlife agency to legalize them. There is plenty of data out there to show they don’t impact harvest numbers, and in fact, they do open up hunting opportunities to newcomers.

I love my Horton. I am not a rep for the company, just happen to have the smallest model and it is perfect for women and children. They make more powerful crossbows, but I am happy with mine, it is perfect for me. It’s not heavy, and is very accurate.

Go to your local bow club, or shooting range, and try one out. You’ll be hooked, I promise!!!

I think the farmers were the most creative, and intelligent survivors during the first depression. They had the survival skills and instinct that I’ve ever read or hear about. They grew gardens, canned their own meat and vegies, sold eggs and milk to stores in return for sugar and flour etc. My grandmother and greatgrandmother had so many stories to tell abourt that era. Not to mention the fact that they also had crops to take care of, and wash laundry the old fashioned way. I can’t imagine how many people could stretch their $$$ the same way now.

But, one can look back to the last Great Depression and realize that people did get by, although it was mighty hard for some. And now, our population has more assistance to help people from starving completely to death.

That is true, but back then most people had some self pride and didn't want hand-outs, they were willing to do any kind of work to earn what they were given. Not so much now.

Now we have more people, massive numbers of illegals, gangs and move government leaches with the entitlement mentality. I'm afraid there will be more violence this time due to these people wanting to "take" what you have.

ME TOO! I thought that’s the first place I’m heading.

Of course an EMP bomb would make that obsolete.
