“My thought was that we have food stamps, WIC, and other programs that help people get food, so if things got really bad...”
And if we’re lucky, we could get some free government cheese from Mark Levin.

What you describe is exactly how my mom’s family lived — Grandpa, Grandma, and eight kids. They worked hard and lived off the land. Grandpa had nothing but contempt for FDR’s WPA people. He called WPA “we poke along” because they weren’t what you’d call “motivated”.

Be very careful about doing business with any company based in UTAH! I have had nothing but trouble with them.
I have used them for years and have never had a problem with them.

If you walk in Israel all over you see fields where the harvest has been left as per the commandment to leave the corners and gleanings for the poor.

Probably the #1 survival rule is be sure that you have an excellent pair of walking boots beforehand. Chances are excellent that many (most?) people will have to hoof it in a real survival scenario.

ya know, one thing i have noticed. none of these survival threads have recommended the one thing that trumps all the others.
specifically: get in shape!
god forbid a doomsday scenario occurs. you can have all the guns, ammo, water, canned goods you want. but what are you going to do if you have to carry all this stuff? what if you have to run, fight, survive outside, climb a mountain with gear?
i think this aspect has been overlooked. imho, someone fit can survive a lot longer without supplies when compared to someone totally out of shape with supplies. supplies run out eventually.
i just haven't seen anyone talk about this aspect of surviving.

"The question to ask is if in the last Great Depression, did society quit functioning totally and leave everyone out in the cold. No, it didnt. It was severe and it was a really big problem, but society was still there doing its thing. And so it will be now, although I do believe it will be quite severe." Uh...excuse me...but....
there is a huge difference between the culture of Amerians then and now. Back then, there was not an entire segment of "society" that had become 'entitlement-minded' and indoctrinated to believe that government was their cradle to grave nanny. Back then, there wasn't a threat of hoards of Afican Americans threatening to riot merely due to losing an election. You think we have a crime problem now? If the government teat dries up due to NO MONEY.... the group of people that leftist/liberal policies has created will be rioting in the steets, breaking into homes and stealing everything that isn't nailed down....much like they already do now, but on a much grander scale.

Likewise, while a gun is nice (and better to have one than not), shooting a deer in a nation that is starving will bring *large* numbers of people toward what they hope will be a deer kill. Drawing attention to yourself by firing a weapon or turning on lights at night...perhaps even a campfire, may be contrary to improving your survival odds. This might be a great time to have a simple slingshot for squirrel hunting. Very quiet.I am stocking lots of food that does not need to be heated. Cooking food gives off odor that could attract unwanted attention.

Sugar is difficult as its hard to keep it dry and ants out of it. Domino now (for now) is packaging sugar in sealed plastic containers (4 lb?). They are a little more expensive than bagged sugar, but provide a reasonable amount for use without opening a giant self-packed bin. And it keeps indefinitely. I've been buying them as they go on sale (got a lot around Christmas when baking items are on sale). By just picking up one each time I was at the store, I amassed a good stock in no time!

I’m glad you mentioned that. I have been using that thought to get me motivated when I don’t want to get my butt out of bed to go to the gym. It didn’t work this morning but I have been to the gym the last 6 days so it was time for a day off anyway.
Another thing people might want to get - a few pair of cheap reading glasses.

Hey! Thanks!
Also, I have been buying those Maxwell house plastic handled seal top container that I can find for a good price for the coffee and then store sugar in them when it’s done. I think I will use those and the Domino ones you talk about.
Thanks again!
