Subject: 200,000 Gay Protestors to Disrupt General Conference
I was speaking with a good friend today who's dad works for the Salt Lake City Police Department. My friend asked him how things were going for him at work and he said that he'd been putting in extra hours doing riot control training. He asked what on earth were they doing that for, and he told him that the entire police force was going through an additional 10 hours of mandatory riot control training because the city is bracing for an influx of 10,000 to 200,000 Gay protesters that want to disrupt this coming General Conference.
Really? Are you aware that plural marriages ended before slavery did? Nice comment though. I guess you don’t value traditional marriage very much, or you might have a teeny weeny inclination to stick up for those who do and actually do something about it.
Oh Lord, let their aim be true, and let between 10,000 to 200,000 unrepentant sinners, who have had more than enough time and people pleading with them to change, fall and not rise again.
The Mormons could be doing us a tremendous favor here if it turns out to be their worst case scenario. I just wouldn’t want to have to touch the bodily fluids.
And that guy standing behind them holding up the sign that stated "Iron My Shirt". LOL.
Nice historical revisionism, freeplancer. (Is this what your Mormon leaders have taught you?) Here, let me provide a proper historical rundown of the period between 1856 and 1910:
1856-1865: The Republican party highlights the defeat of polygamy to be a key plank in its first national platform, characterizing it alongside slavery as one of the "twin relics of barbarism".
Lincoln issued two emancipation proclamation orders in 1862 and 1863, and by July, 1865, 4 million slaves had been set free. The 13th amendment was passed by Dec. of 1865, thereby killing off whatever institutional vestige of slavery.
On the other hand, emancipation for mainstream LDS plural wives came only via death or institutionally ended in the 20th century (& even then it continued thru the LDS "step-daughters", the fLDS).
1899: Mormon congressman B.H. Roberts was voted into office by Mormon Utah but denied his seat because he had taken yet another plural wife after the Mormon "prophet" had supposedly called a halt to the practice earlier that decade.
Guess what happened that year to ensure Roberts wasn't seated? A petition of 7 million citizen signatures was delivered to Congress...covering 28 rolls each two feet in diameter and encased in an American flag. This is 1899, freeplancer...we didn't have even 100-signature petitions being delivered to Congress in 1899 about slavery.
1890-1910: Specifically 220 Mormon men are named by author B. Carmon Hardy (a descendent of one of these men) who took an additional wife between 1890 and 1910. The overwhelming majority of them were not "convicted and sentenced" for their crimes.
And what about the period before plural marriage was publicly (but not privately) called to a halt by Mormon leadership -- the period after slaves were set free?
1865-1890: Hardy, in his book: A Solemn Covenant: The Mormon Polygamous Passage, references how at its late 19th century peak, Mormonism was practiced by 20 to 30% of its membership. (What? Are you trying to claim that 20-30% or more of the South still owned slaves in the late 19th century?)
Yikes - seen this yet?

Why do they need to “work”?
Or, rather, this IS work. What do you think the $4 billion in the Porkulus Bill was for? ACORN has 175,000 members. How long can 175,000 people live on $4 billion? For some time, I think.
I don’t read your tripe because it has foam all over it from your mouth. Here is a fact for you; the LDS church stopped plural marriage in 1890 (look it up). It is a fact that the last “known” black slaves were discovered in 1902. Look it up and have a nice day if you can.
that was a different protest.
This was a protest that was so small it was shades of the cindy sheehan picture of her surrounded by reporters.
The DBM tried to fluff up the protest by saying it was a “national attention” protest.
200,000 is a big cluster.
I’m not a Mormon but I gag to think of protesters trying to wreck some group’s religious event. Talk about intolerant!
You're being 100% inconsistent. It's a known fact that the U.S. govt stopped slavery by the end of 1865 and that a few cases of slavery extended beyond that date. (For sake of argument, let's say 1902).
It's also a known fact that the U.S. govt did its best to halt polygamy -- and that the LDS Church publicly (and finally) kicked in at 1890...but like slavery, thousands of cases extended beyond that date.
First of all, the LDS church in most cases didn't force existing polygamous families to break up.
As for new plural marriages that were privately approved by LDS leaders, authors like B. Carmon Hardy have been able to document at least 220 between 1890 and 1910. You can look that up in Hardy's book, A Solemn Covenant, in the appendix.
Since I'll assume you won't bother to look it up, I'll narrow it down for you. Here are the Mormon men who took additional Mormon wives beyond 1901... Source is Solemn Covenant: The Mormon Polygamous Passage, B. Carmon Hardy, University of IL Press, 1992, Appendix.
You'll count 107 plural Mormon marriages that occurred (and were privately approved and solemnized by LDS leaders) between 1902 and 1910. So, while I'm open to concede that you are right about slavery still being practiced in 1902...how willing are you to concede these plural marriages took place between 1902-1910? And if you're not, lurkers please note: This is exactly why our jury system eliminates those with a conflict of interest...anything that shows realistic Mormon history is censored from their own minds and from open public discussion.

Note: The reason for slashes above such as 2nd/3rd or 3rd/4th or 4th/5th is because the date of death isn't noted for an earlier wife...therefore, if she was deceased the wife # is the lower figure...if she was still alive, the higher #.
Not to jump too far into your discussion, but there are probably around 20,000 slaves in the US today, according to some sources. Some of them are sex slaves, kept in line by threats against their family (guess which country most are from.) It’s not formally called slavery anymore, just “do what I tell you or I’ll kill you and your family.”
That will be a target rich environment.
Well, exactly. Human trafficking exists -- particularly in countries like India, Thailand, Burma, (even in the U.S.). This is indeed slavery. But polygamy still exists, too -- particularly among Muslims, in pockets of Africa, and among fLDS in Utah, Arizona, Texas, British Columbia, Mexico and elsewhere (the latter all thanks to LDS polygamy in the 19th century).
So, it's true. We don't really fully exterminate any of these barbaristic practices. They just get tucked away.
Nazi Sexuality alert. Hitler would have been proud, Gay Proud that is.
