Lots of people keep exotic animals.

In most cases, they shouldn't. In the case of large, dangerous exotics like chimps, lions, rock pythons etc., they're not just endangering themselves, they're also endangering their neighbors, not to mention any family members living in the same house. And most people do not have the resources to provide a decent environment or existence for undomesticated animals accustomed to foraging and patrolling over large territories every day.

There are exotic pets and there are exotic pets.

Rock pythons and reticulated pythons - probably not. Smaller non-poisonous snakes - o.k.

Chimps and lions are probably mistakes.
