The 15-minute recording captures the bizarre horror of Monday's attack, which left a 55-year-old woman critically injured and the 200-pound ape dead in a hail of police gunfire.

"Hurry, please! He ripped her face off," the ape's frantic owner, Sandy Herold, 70, is heard telling the dispatcher on the tapes released Tuesday night.

"Listen to me, you have to shoot him."

The terrifying screeches of Travis the chimpanzee are heard as he mercilessly pounces on Herold's pal, Charla Nash.

"He killed her!" Herold told the dispatcher. "He ripped her apart. He tried attacking me. How fast can you get here?"

The dispatcher sounds incredulous as Herold describes how she had to stab the burly ape and only aggravated him.

"He's eating her," Herold screamed. "Please have them go faster."

This is in no way surprising, and this woman should have always been prepared. Here's a recent chimpanzee horror story:<

Chimp Mauling Under Investigation
HAVILAH, Calif., March 4, 2005
(AP) Investigators said they are trying to figure out how two chimpanzees that viciously attacked a visitor at an animal sanctuary escaped from their cage.

The chimps chewed off St. James Davis' nose and severely mauled his genitals and limbs Thursday before the son-in-law of the sanctuary's owner shot the animals to death, authorities said.

Davis, 62, and his wife had gone to there to visit another chimpanzee that had lived with them for decades before they were forced to give the animal up. LaDonna Davis, 64, was bit on the hand.

...

The Davises were at Animal Haven Ranch, in a canyon 30 miles east of Bakersfield, to celebrate the birthday of Moe, a 39-year-old chimpanzee who was taken from their suburban Los Angeles home in 1999 after biting off part of a woman's finger.

The couple had brought Moe a cake and were standing outside his cage when Buddy and Ollie, two of the four chimpanzees in the adjoining cage, attacked St. James Davis, said Steve Martarano, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game. Moe was not involved in the attack.

Dr. Maureen Martin of Kern Medical Center told KGET-TV of Bakersfield that the monkeys chewed most of Davis' face off and that he would require extensive surgery in an attempt to reattach his nose. Chealander told The Bakersfield Californian that the chimps also tore off Davis' testicles and foot.

There are exotic pets and there are exotic pets.

Rock pythons and reticulated pythons - probably not. Smaller non-poisonous snakes - o.k.

Chimps and lions are probably mistakes.

Yet another reason not to have an unknown quantity like a 200 pound, semi-domesticated prone-to-violent rages animal hanging around in your house!

End of thread for me. Bye-Y'all....

I am reminded of the Dane Cook routine: He’s at a party and he says “I want a monkey.”. And there is always the serious guy that comes up to him: “dude, no—you really don’t want a monkey!”

“This reminds me of the video of the woman who got out of her car to feed bread to a bear. When she ran out of bread she said to the bear “All gone”. That’s when the bear ate her...

No! Tell me that really didn’t happen! “

This is from the Darwin awards 2000
http://darwinawards.com/personal/personal2000-36.html
A friend of mine worked for the National Park Service as a ranger at Yellowstone Park. One day he joined a crowd of people, cars, trucks and motor homes that had congregated to watch a bear. One woman and her little boy caught his attention. She was smearing something unidentifiable all over the boy’s face.

He asked the woman what she was doing. She answered, “Putting honey on him, of course!”

Stunned, the ranger asked the obvious question: Why? She answered matter-of-factly, “I want to take a picture of the bear licking it off his face!”

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your point of view, my friend prevented them from approaching the bear, but to this very day, he has nightmares about it. This event just goes to show why some animals will eat their own young in the wild.
