I see that Virginia Senator James Webb is in the news with an announcement about preserving "Virginia’s abundant natural, historical, and cultural resources." That's great.
In his editorial, Webb stated:
"Virginia is fortunate to have such an abundant supply of pristine lands steeped in history. Extending the Civil War Battlefields Preservation program will enable children to experience the same untouched landscapes of their ancestors and visit the places where so many sacrifices were made, by soldiers and civilians, alike."
I'm grateful that Senator Webb recognizes this emotional connection Virginians have to their ancestors and the land. (Too bad others don't.) Webb is one of the few in national office who understands the issues surrounding WBTS heritage commemoration:
"Even the venerable Robert E. Lee has taken some vicious hits, as dishonest or misinformed advocates among political interest groups and in academia attempt to twist yesterday’s America into a fantasy that might better serve the political issues of today. The greatest disservice on this count has been the attempt by these revisionist politicians and academics to defame the entire Confederate Army . . ."

I wonder what Lee would say about Webb tossing a friend and fellow vet overboard when the friend was caught carrying Webb’s gun into the capitol building.
Is Webb still writing kiddie porn stories about Vietnam?
I don’t know as I’m not familiar with the story.
Webb is a socialist who voted for the stimulus package.
Webb is obviously a contradictory personality. He’s hard to figure, especially if you’re familiar with all his history. The article/post are about a very narrow topic, not Webb’s politics.
Webb also supports amnesty and our pro-population growth immigration policies. One out of every ten Virginians is now foreign born and that number continues to increase. By 2050, one in every five residents of this country will be foreign born—and that is without an amnesty. How much of our founders’ values and culture will survive this onslaught that will increase the population of the US from 305 million today to 439 million by 2050? Will urban sprawl hurt these “pristine” areas?
Yep. Even a politician that I disagree with a majority of the time can still do laudable things.
I still think he’s a jerk, but he’s right about this — the Scots-Irish will NEVER be conquered, we will NEVER give up. We don’t know how to give up. You can take our property, you can put us down for a time militarily, but on the inside, “You can take our lives but you cannot take our FREEEEEEDOOOOOOM!!!”
Actually, if the so-called african-americans had any understanding of history and of what my people have gone through, they would not be so quick to pronounce judgement.
Great - more government intervention into the real estate market. Just what we need - more real estate market inflation.
We (our HOA) are applying for several million dollars for the preservation of our very historic Virginia community.
It all depends on who’s ox is being gored. By all means, if they’re passing out the pork, we should get our battlefields preserved. I haven’t been to most of them - I’d like them to look nice when I go.
My department is grant funded. Nuff said.
Though I voted for Webb and believed him to be a “conservative Democrat” (if there is such an animal), he blew it with me when he signed on to Barry-o’s stim plan
Then, the real gems ~ the half dozen homes where some of Bill Clinton's appointees lived who are now still fleeing federal criminal warrants!
There's the house where this Iranian Gypsy lived ~ he turned state's evidence in the case of dope dealers violating the $10000 unreported cash transaction limits.
There's the place AlQaida guys smoked cigarettes in the evening, and so forth.
Well worth preserving ~ $5 mil ~ just changed my mind. We need more money for this, and a tour guide on duty!
It is interesting that Lee, when he was an adviser to Jefferson Davis before taking command after Joseph Johnson was wounded, repeatedly asked that the army be mainly posted about the Confederate capitol and only other areas of the eastern South that he considered strategically important. Davis wouldn't listen and felt that the trans-Mississipi (where there was little infrastructure to sustain the South's economy) was of critical value. Accordingly, good Southern men were wasted and the war was lost when there was a reasonable chance it might have been won.
Davis, like Bush who signed on to Rumsfeld's limited-war strategy in pre-surge Iraq, was a good man but a poor wartime president.
One can only wish that the values and constancy of character of Robert E. Lee were now common aspirations of our fellow citizens. Alas, we have committed instead to whore after the fictions of the media and substitute color of skin for content of character.
Why is it that Bedford Forrest is credited only for founding the KKK instead of seeking to disband it because “of its violence and murdering ways” as he stated? (but it would have probably sounded like “of hits violance and mudderin’ ways” when he said it.
