Michelle Obama -- fashion's non-icon

NEW YORK (Reuters) – First lady Michelle Obama is widely hailed as a fashion icon, but industry insiders say she's quite the opposite, and that's a good thing.

A fashion icon would have an eye-catching signature look and, while the president's wife has the power to set trends, her appeal is refreshingly not so defined and deliberate, said fashion observers at the semi-annual Fashion Week in New York, where designers are showing their Fall 2009 collections.

Oh, for God’s sake... This is a sweetened way of saying Michelle hasn’t the face or the body to be a fashion plate. Aunt Esther just ain’t got “it.”

Of course it’s a good thing! Nothing she does or wears will ever be bad. How could it possibly be? She’s Michelle Obama for pete’s sakes. /s

Good Lord.

I usually pay no particular attention to anyone’s clothes, but I have to say Michelle’s ball gown brought forth a lot of nostalgia in me. It looked like it was made from my grandma’ chenille bedspread.

Anyone who saw the video of her appearance before the teachers’ union last week in a ratty gray jacket over a shiny purple satin blouse could see that she definitely has her own look. I think they once labeled it “shabby chic.”

I think it’s funny how she was supposed to be some power wife, not some old fashioned first lady who just talks clothes and stuff, and what’s most of what we hear about her in the press? FASHION news.

I know that many Americans are having buyer’s remorse about these two, but I have this sense that Barack and Michelle themselves are thinking “Why did we want this, exactly?”

Forget heroin shiek, this is insomnia sleep—I’ve never seen two more listless people in public.

Seething anger combined with horrible fashion sense for a liberal amounts to a “good thing she is not a fashion icon.” A conservative that is well dressed and has impeccable taste is deemed an evil rich witch lording over the poor peasants.

I thought the same thing. She was a lawyer. First Lady, measured by her fashion sense.

Course, she need not buy anything with a bustle.

I wonder when they’ll realize, she ain’t pretty or fashionable. It’s like being nice because they feel sorry for her.

"First lady Michelle Obama is widely hailed as a fashion icon..."

Michelle is like a lot of icons I've seen up close: flat, cracked and badly in need of restoration.

Same here only my gramma’s had pastel pink and yellow flowers with mint green leaves and vines.

[hmmmmm....maybe some subtle, nostalgic floral splashes would’ve “turned her look around” a bit, although she does seem to favor Victorian sofa upholstery fabrics]....;D
