Arizona’s first Scout troop restores sign
Sierra Vista Herald/Bisbee Review ^ | Shar Porier

BISBEE — There’s something new in the Warren Community Church yard that is the result of a Boy Scout’s Eagle service project.

Sunday after church, 17-year-old Michael Donahue of Troop 1 in Bisbee unveiled his Eagle Scout project that took nearly two years to complete. It was the original Scout sign for Troop 401 that used to reside at the former clubhouse of the scouts.

Donahue had to raise $400 to pay for the project, which included a new rock base, wood repair and repainting of the sign.

“This sign was once in front of the Boy Scout meeting hall down the road and was built as another scout’s Eagle project in 1968 in celebration of Troop 401’s 50th anniversary,” he explained.

The repainted sign and new rock wall were dedicated to Pastor Jack McCann, who was instrumental in keeping Troop 401 active.

“Pastor Jack McCann played a huge role in chartering our troop and keeping it alive throughout the years. He dedicated much of his time to helping out with troop activities and making sure the troop was running smoothly,” Donahue added.

The troop was actually the first Boy Scout troop in Arizona. As the legend goes, Bisbee city fathers stopped a train bound for Phoenix and “kidnapped” the heads of the Boy Scouts of America, said Greg Linden who has been with the troop for the past 13 years. The officials were to present the first charter to a troop in Phoenix. After whisking them off to Bisbee, the national scout organizers agreed to grant Bisbee its charter in 1918, making it the first scout troop in Arizona.

Since the troop is Arizona’s first, they decided to change their troop number from 401 to 1 in honor of that distinction, added Scoutmaster Terry Feldman.

Feldman couldn’t have been prouder of his newest Eagle-rank scout. Donahue was the third scout to reach the distinguished rank during his time as head of the troop. And he’s particularly proud that four more scouts are working on their Eagle Scout projects, too.

“The Eagle rank is like scouting’s Ph.D. They have to pick a project, propose it, raise money for it and then manage it from beginning to end,” Feldman said.

Mayor Jack Porter commended the young man on his accomplishment and recalled his own days in the scouts in Troop 406 in Old Bisbee. He told Donahue that he was in some pretty good company with the likes of Neil Armstrong, Steven Spielberg, Sam Nunn, Walter Cronkite, Jimmy Stewart, Ross Perot and others, all of whom were Eagle award recipients.

Pastor Warren Griffin said, “Jack (McCann) would be very proud as we all are. Scouting is a good example for all young boys and I hope to see more come into scouting.”

You bet!

This is one of the FEW organizations that is GOOD!

It's too bad I can't say the same of the GIRL SCOUTS.

They allow lesbians in without question and support LIBERAL causes with their fund raising.

Boy Scouts have taken a beating because of their stand for righteousness. What has happened to our country when young people and their group is chastised for wanting to do what’s right? Girl Scouts have given in to PC and they will eventually pay for it. Very sad.

Absolutely!

I support the BSA whenever I can because they are a righteous group helping boys to be righteous.

I do NOT support the Girl Scouts and I tell the ADULT WHY. I don’t take it out on the little girls - but the ADULTS need to know. Most don’t care and view me as the “monster”. LOL!!!!

Nicely done, Scout!

(Dang! I’m gonna have to rent “Follow Me, Boys!” for this evening’s viewing. Great scouting movie!)

I know, have my own copy. Want your own copy? Go to ScoutStuff.org and search on “Follow Me, Boys!” Best part is that ScoutStuff.org is a Boy Scouts of America site so any profit goes back into Scouts.

I'm a little confused as to why this was an acceptable Eagle Project?

From the Eagle Workbook:

“Eagle Scout leadership service projects involving council property or other BSA activities are not acceptable for an Eagle service project. The service project also may not be performed for a business, be of a commercial nature, or be a fund-raiser.”

A Cubmaster here, but when and if you can, please give to the Boy Scouts of America.

Why is this under homosexual agenda? I don’t see anything homosexuality-related here. Is there more to this story? Did homo activists harm this sign originally or something?

People don’t like being faced with the truth. Very sad. Girl Scouts was a good group when I was growing up. I was a Brownie and then a Girl Scout. I loved it. Now I would recommend AWANA, a Christian group for boys and girls.

While the sign restoration is a worthwhile endeavor, I’m not convinced that this was an appropriate Eagle Scout project.

Someone else added that keyword, not I. Suspect it was becuase the “Alternative Lifestylers” hate the Scouts for not letting “Alternative Lifestylers” be adult leaders and have a Happy Hunting & Recuiting grounds for the “Alternative Lifestyler.”

Ah, well, I’m gay, but I think the Boy Scouts have ever right to have whatever membership requirements they want. I just hate to see the overuse of the keyword ‘homosexual agenda’ on stories like this. Here’s a troop who did a wonderful thing for the community. The piece doesn’t even mention homosexuality.

Says FR's resident "gay Christian" who's screen name literally translates to "boyfan"

No, wasn't me who added the keyword.

DirtyHarry keeps saying this, despite the fact that I have explained to him that Nino stands for Antonin Scalia. He is known on the Court and in legal circles as ‘Nino’. I am a fan of his jurisprudence, so the name makes sense. Don’t believe me? From wikipedia: “ Scalia is sometimes referred to by the nickname “Nino”, and his colleagues refer to the frequent short case-related memos he sends as Ninograms.”

The fact that DirtyHarry keeps repeating such a childish line says more about him than it does about me, but I think most reasonable people on this site can see such an exchange and realize that, so I just let it roll off.

Oh, and if people want to add ‘homosexual agenda’ as a keyword to articles about homosexual issues, then whatever, I don’t complain about that. It’s when it’s attached to something entirely unrelated like a painting of a sign by Boy Scouts that I think it’s silly. It makes literally no sense. It’d be like adding Hillary Clinton to an article about Wellesley College that never referred to anything about her even once in the piece. It’s just pointless.
