Taken at Rondeau Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, this image shows a fight between a redheaded woodpecker and a yellow-shafted northern flicker over a nest hole. The redheaded woodpeckers tried to chase away the intruding flickers but after this encounter, the fight was over. The flicker managed to grab the redheaded by its tongue and force it all the way down to the ground. Both birds spiraled while falling to the ground. It must have been painful as the redheaded gave up after this clash.

Gorgeous, and that is the red heads tongue the flicker has!! Never saw a flicker,would love to.

We always know when they have returned as they take great delight in knocking on the attic air vents. They are a type of woodpecker. dddddrrrrrt trilling the first two letters gives a good example of the sound they make while hammering on the vents. It sounds like about ten hits per second. and lasts about a second. They are fun to watch as they are pretty big birds.

I’m pretty lucky to have several species of woodpeckers (including these) in the area. My favorite is the Pileated woodpecker.

Saw a couple of those in northern Ontario. Impressive bird, about the size of a crow.

I have them in my yard a lot. The funny thing is they bang away at the metal roof and drains on my garage almost as much as on the trees. I guess they must like the sound.

Flickers share my back yard. They have lived there for years and years. Some how they co exist with robins and probe the exact same ground for eats.
We have no Red Heads but do have the spectacular Red Breasted variety.
We also have yellow breasted sapsuckers who have lived in the Virburnum bush for so long I don’t even remember.
