Cows No Match for Rail Runner (NM-Richardson's Railroad)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | February 3, 2009 | Lloyd Jojola

Three-thousand-six-hundred horse power beats one cow power any day, to which Rail Runner Express locomotive engineers can attest.

Because since the state's commuter train started running to Santa Fe in mid-December, at least five track-crossing cows have been bumped off by the rail carrier in that corridor.

And, while train overseers and interested landowners like Santo Domingo Pueblo have forged an agreement to buffer the beef, the issue probably won't meander away.

"It's likely not ever going to stop completely because — I don't know if you've ever dealt with cows. When they have a desire to do something, a fence is little obstacle to them," said Santo Domingo Pueblo Gov. Everett F. Chavez.

Look at it this way. One less methane producer; Santa Fe greenies ought to be happy.

When trains hit animals, there's usually not much left. We lost 4 horses to a train truck/trailer crash, and they were thrown about 60 feet from impact. What a mess that was. They will never stop cows from going to the other side of the tracks because they always look for greener grass. Kinda like men do. LOL

If they don't put up a fence, they'll lose all of their cows. The railroad settled with us for $5K a horse, but that was many years ago. I'm sure a cow in today's market would bring more. Imagine how much money all of the steaks that one cow could bring. ;o)

Yes and just think it is the New Mexico taxpayers that get to pay for all of those steaks.
