The relative sizes also allows for annular eclipses, such as the one this past Monday visible in Asia which heralded the Chinese New Year -- of the "Ox", in this go-round.

It has to be celestial affirmative action. The sun is forced to locate itself further from the Earth so that it will appear the same size, thus preventing the moon from developing an inferiority complex.
