LONG-LOST ABE [ HISTORIC PHOTO'S AMAZING COMEBACK]
New York Post ^ | January 31 2009 | BEN DOBBIN, AP

ROCHESTER, NY - Seated by a window in the Illinois state Capitol in 1860, a beardless Abraham Lincoln held still 25 seconds for a classic campaign portrait of the soon-to-be president. It was undoubtedly a personal favorite.

"That looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen," Lincoln said in a letter to photographer Alexander Hesler. "If it pleases the people, I am satisfied."

To mark the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birth on Feb. 12, the long-lost positive transparency of this photograph goes on display beginning tomorrow at the George Eastman House museum of photography in Rochester.

It wasn’t the Civil War that aged Abe - it was the constant insane yammering of Helen Thomas questioning his military tactics.

I pretty much figured the hijacking would be pretty rapid. It always is.

pics of Lincoln, before and after. It always struck me how much difference there was. He aged so much and looked so sad at the end.

Happens to every President in a national crisis, and even not in national crisis ... POTUS is a rough job, not for the feint hearted. Abe Lincoln came to office in a huge national crisis, and history will tell that his election actually sparked that crisis, the secession of the Southern States.

In my lifetime I've watched LBJ age immensely in the mere 5 years he was in office, Nixon in 6 years, Carter in only 4 years, Reagan in 8, and yes even Clinton and Dubya Bush in their 8 years each ... the office takes it toll, and my prediction is that Obama will be grey haired and looking lousy and worn out before he turns 50

The civil war was a long time in coming and a whole series of presidents kicked the can down the road. Lincoln refused to put it off for future generations.

Have you ever read about the life of George Eastman? It’s hard to believe a person could suffer as many setbacks as that man did and still be remembered for the good he did. I think, and I could be wrong, that he ended up taking his own life.

I saw a History Channel documentary on his life and work once. It was truly amazing.

Well the truth is that Abe’s wife had some serious problems and I think might have aged him...

Here is a link to a documentary on the History Channel. I think this was probably the program I saw. George Eastman Bio

Wikipedia has some interesting facts about Eastman, too. He did, indeed, end his own life.
