While we're on the subject. I turn my TV off but the red light on the converter box is still on. Can someone explain? I set the TV to go off on a timer...after I drift off.

Do I have to unplug the unit to make it go off??

If you want to save power, yes. That light will stay on as long as it has juice. It is the recorder function that tapes your activity and records your voice and sends it back to the government.

just kidding..

I suppose it depends on your unit. Mine is blue when on, and does shine a red light when off. I suppose this takes a little energy; but, if I were to unplug it from the wall, I would have to rescan for channels, which would be annoying.

If the timer you use is the kind that plugs into the wall, I wouldn’t connect the DTV converter into it...because of the rescanning problem.
