Major plot points from Battlestar Galactica were also front page headlines over the past few years: terrorism, secret tribunals, prisoner abuse, war. Will the show continue to feel relevant with Obama running America?
With only a few episodes left in the series, BSG is about to disappear from the airwaves. The question is whether it will stand the test of time as the world changes. We've got three reasons why Battlestar might remain relevant in years ahead, and three reasons why it might be headed for the ashcan of history.
Why it's still relevant: Stirring portrait of multicultural, gender-equal leadership. The Fleet is a good example of what leadership might look like in a post-Obama America. One of the most powerful stories that BSG tells is of a community whose leadership is mixed-race and gender-equal. Admiral Adama is the Caprican equivalent of Latino, while characters like Gaeta, Dualla, and Tory are mixed-race. And women occupy some of the highest positions in the government and the military. While some shows might make a big deal out of this, and smarm you with PC unctuousness, BSG simply takes it for granted that its human society is racially mixed. Certainly there are racial issues, such as the dark-skinned Sagittarans being oppressed by the lighter-skinned Capricans. But the Sagittaran vs. Caprican conflict is really about economic power: The Sagittarans are poor, and that's what makes them powerless - not the color of their skins. BSG's mixed race future is part of that "hope" which the Obama Administration promises.

This reads like something written by a college sophomore after a night spent in front of the dorm rumpus-room TV with the bong.
Only in the sense he’s a Cylon.
Where’s Lorne Greene when the country needs him.
yeah its dragging lately. I figure it has to pick up in the next 7-8 episodes or whatever is left.
what is NC?
Has this person been watching the show recently?
I think the sentiment of this article proves that Battlestar Galactica was merely a reflection of the liberal mindset during George W’s presidency. From the 9/11 parallels to the New Caprica-Iraq war contrivances, Galactica was little more than a sci-fi window into the liberal mindset. The Cylons nuke Caprica and Adama has to publicly struggle to think of a reason for the human race to continue to exist.
Liberals were the ones who felt like a small renegade group fighting to survive against a powerful force of millions of identical drones with a scary religion that only had one god. Of course, once things started going and the day-to-day struggles so powerful in the beginning began to wane in favor of some kind of point, we find there really is none. And now all they can do is lash out at mommy and daddy aka Rosilyn and Adama.
Dead, lo these many years....
What is NC?
New Caprica...where the sojourners settled and became enslaved by the Cylons.
You said — “Wheres Lorne Greene when the country needs him.”
Ummm..., wrong guy, wrong series... :-)
Lords..... To quote William Shatner, this person needs to get a life!!! IT IS JUST A TV SHOW!!!
Will it be relevant? In the sense that the nation was led to the promised land and it'll turn out to be a bigger piece of crap that the land that they thought that they were leaving behind? Sure.
Will it be relevant in the "we met the enemy and he is us" sense with the election of the new leader? Check, got that, too.
And, funny how cutting edge a show can be when it can be summed up in the words of a cartoon character from 1970.
No, Lorne Greene would be the right guy. He could kick all their asses, know right from wrong, good from evil, and take care of business.
Oh well..., I never really did like that show, but I do like the current one. Just one more season and that’s all...
I like what the show could’ve been had it had the time to develop. The miniseries was good. The show needed work. But everything about that show was inverted (or perverted) to make the current show.
right....I dont do initals well.
Fixed it.
I think the original miniseries was well done, but it’s just too dark to keep going back, week after week. The human race is destroyed, down to 50,000 or so people. Relentless robots hunt them down.
It’s been a nihilistic downer all along. I think even by that standard it lost its footing with “One Year Later,” and never regained its footing. The 4th season mid-way cliffhanger was a groaner. I finally quit on the series entirely after the first episode back this 1/2-season.
Give me Babylon 5 any day of the week.
You must have missed that scene in the mini-series where she clocks Tighe, nearly knocking him out. And the multiple times she led Colonial Marines on battle missions in the series. And how many times did she kill the Cylon who kept her in captivity? Do you remember that one time, where she stabbed him in the neck, then sat down to a nice dinner, after wiping the blood from her hands? She can kick some ass. Oh, and in case you think that the female of the species is "weaker" in general, I suggest you try sneaking up on a sow bear, especially if she's got cubs.

All that bs only happens on TV...
