Most likely rabies. Bobcats normally shy away from people.

How soon will PETA come out with a statement condemning these attacks? It is amazing what a hammer backed by a whole lot of adrenaline can do.

Was the hammer registered? Did they have a conceal-carry permit?

IF I HAD A HAMMER (The Hammer Song)
words and music by Lee Hays and Pete Seeger

If I had a hammer
I’d hammer in the morning
I’d hammer in the evening
All over this land
I’d hammer out danger
I’d hammer out a warning
I’d hammer out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

If I had a bell
I’d ring it in the morning
I’d ring it in the evening
All over this land
I’d ring out danger
I’d ring out a warning
I’d ring out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

If I had a song
I’d sing it in the morning
I’d sing it in the evening
All over this land
I’d sing out danger
I’d sing out a warning
I’d sing out love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

Well I’ve got a hammer
And I’ve got a bell
And I’ve got a song to sing
All over this land
It’s the hammer of justice
It’s the bell of freedom
It’s the song about love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land

That's what they say. My experience is otherwise. The bobcats around here don't seem to take much notice of people one way or the other. However, they don't usually attack people, though, so you may be correct about it being rabid.

“How did the bobcat get a hold of a hammer”

I think the hammer was being used to construct the fence and the bobcat just wanted extra claws.

"When animals attack" ping.

Seen many bobcats. They've all just strolled away from me. Then stopped and watched me. Then strolled away. Then stopped and watched. Then strolled away. Repeat endlessly.

Something (rabies?) was definitely wrong with this one.

“How did the bobcat get a hold of a hammer”

My thoughts exactly. Why is this even a story? If I ran into an "attacking bobcat with hammer", I'd kill it too. Shoot, I'd kill even it it didn't have a hammer.

They are called ‘wild’ animals for a reason.

There’s a joke in there about sea kittens but I can’t think of one.

This is what happens when we allow wild animals access to hand tools. At first they’re very friendly and seem so innocuous. Then they feel they deserve union wages and when they are denied, they go postal, attacking anything in their way. ;^)

“The bobcats around here don’t seem to take much notice of people one way or the other”

I’ve seen similar behavior with foxes, they hunt mice in our soybean fields and if you are still they will get quite close. There was also a bobcat that would eat the cat food my sister had put out for her cats, it also didn’t seem too concerned about people.

I like the idea of having a firearm handy so I don't have to get in to the whole mano-a-feline thing.

General Woundwart says "cats aren't dangerous"

OTOH

Carter had gone on a solo fishing expedition in his hometown of Plains, Georgia when the rabbit approached his boat, "hissing menacingly, its teeth flashing and nostrils flared and making straight for the president",[1] trying desperately to enter the boat, causing Carter to flail at the swimming creature with the oars from his boat.
