I think the hammer was being used to construct the fence and the bobcat just wanted extra claws.

“How did the bobcat get a hold of a hammer” My thoughts exactly. Why is this even a story? If I ran into an "attacking bobcat with hammer", I'd kill it too. Shoot, I'd kill even it it didn't have a hammer.
