Oh, wait, Oscars mean more money for the winners, so I guess they won't be refusing them, the hypocrites.
Sorry, got OT there...
Note, what paper picked up the paper.
Come on people, this is just rotten sportsmanship. The coach should be ashamed.
Look, the players on the team that lost have learned that they have no future in hoop, so they can begin the search for some other activity better suited to their skills and abilities, and they've had some good exercise At least that's the way it used to be before everybody was supposed to be the same, and merit was replaced by affirmative action, etc. Liberalism is a disease.
They should apologize...and the Covenenant coach should be dismissed.
Taking three point shots and stripping the ball from the other teams point guard when the score was already up? Incredibly bad sportsmanship. Doesnt' Cov. have a second or third string? Why not bring in those girls and have them play a tight zone defense. It would have slowed the game and given the others playing time (and time practicing a D that they wouldn't ordinarily get to do.) Also, that they kept stripping the ball from the weak Dallas point guard is just awful...after about ten easy layups (and a twenty point margin on those shots) shouldn't the Cov. coach said, 'let them bring the ball up?'
Not a liberal thing at all...just horrible sportsmanship.
High school loses by 13 (touchdowns), 91 - 0
Football 1916: Georgia Tech 222 Cumberland College 0
I didn't see any of these in recent threads. I recall the story of Cumberland. Their team made up plays during the game, something like -5 yards per carry. As I recall they did not have an established team.
“It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened.”
Just remember... for the rest of their lives, being eceptional will be something to be ashamed of.
Just what we need more of.
It could very well be that the girls on the losing team don't even remember the game, or might even think they won it :)
The apology is not for winning, it’s for pressing the whole game. As the other poster said, the winning coach could have played zone which would still be an honest effort at playing defense but would have slowed the game tempo and lessened the unneeded feeding frenzy after the outcome was decided. A smart coach would have taken the opportunity to work on his zone and to reward and improve his younger backups who work in practice but who don’t usually get much playing time. It has nothing to do with liberals in sports but everything to do with a coach who showed no common basketball sense.
Showing remorse after the game is all about the team that won and not the losing team. Yes this seems very new age/liberal/no one is a loser socialistic.
However the place that this went wrong was during the game. To score that many points the winners really had to be pouring it on likely with great glee. Usually very good teams that find themselves with an opponent that is very weak put the game out of reach and then uses their own back up players etc to keep the win but avoid the rout.
You should never allow someone to win that can not win on their own but at the same time you do not need to beat them to death...
No, this isn’t about being liberal. The other team didn’t even score one basket in the entire game! You don’t run up the score to 100.
I am a licensed soccer coach. In a similar situation on the pitch you tell your players that they have to shoot left footed, or they have to have x number of passes before they shoot on goal. You don’t humiliate the other team!
Were the teams playing on different courts? :)
Let the results stand.
If the losing team was indeed a special needs school and the coach was pressing all game long? The coach of the winning team should be fired. Don’t apologize, just fire his sorry @$$. It’s called good sportsmanship. If you can’t do it, you don’t belong on the court.
Afterwards isn’t the right time for this. It’s more like rubbing salt in the losing team’s wounds — “See, you’re such hopeless retards that we can totally *cream* you, and now that we’ve shown you and everybody else by doing it, we’ll try to make ourselves look like we care about you by applying for a forfeit.”
If the winning team didn’t have some second and third stringers for whom this would have been a rare opportunity to get some playing time without chalking up a loss for the team, they shouldn’t have agreed to play this winless special-ed school in the first place. It sounds like the head of the “winning” school wouldn’t have allowed this to happen in the first place if he’d known about it in time.
Personally, I think any coach who allows his team to run up a score like this is an @sshole.
When I was in high school our (all-white) basketball team was regularly trounced by another school in our league whose (mostly black) basketball team occasionally produced legitimate NBA prospects. By halftime none of the starters were left in the game, and this team made the point of bringing some of their junior varsity players along for games like this.
Those were some of the most gracious, classy winners you'd ever meet, too.
Only one way to make losing 100-0 more humiliating... Have the other team apologize for what, accidentally being so much better than you?
I heard a great sportsmanship story on the radio in Detroit this week. Seems two high school football teams were recently playing. Late in the 4th quarter, it was apparent that one team would win. The coach had a kid on the team who has Down Syndrome. He’s on the team, shows at every practice and gets very litle play time. He generally played defense but had recently told the coach he wanted to try to be a running back. With 2 minutes to go, the coach put him in and he made two plays with a toal gain of one yard.
The opposing (losing) teams coach saw this new kid and could tell that he wasn’t very good. He asked someone on the sidelines what the deal was and found out about the kid with Down Syndrome.
He said “If this kid worked all that hard to gain a yard, he deserves to get a touchdown.” Then he called a time out and called his team together and told them to make it look real but that kid was going to score.
A stunning example of bedwetting.
This has to be one of the dumbest things I've seen all week. It's a SPORT, a comeptition, you are supposed to seek victory.
