Two separate studies through NASA confirm that since 2003, the world's oceans have been losing heat. In the peak of the recent warming trend, 1998 actually ranked 2nd to 1934 as the warmest year on record.
John Willis, an oceanographer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, published his first report about the warming oceans. He used data from1993-2003 that showed the warm-up and followed the Global Warming Theory. In 2006, he co-piloted a follow-up study led by John Lyman at Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory in Seattle that updated the time series for 2003-2005. Surprisingly, the ocean seemed to have cooled. He was surprised, and called it a 'speed bump' on the way to global warming.
A second, independent study was conducted. Takmeng Wong and his colleagues at NASAs Langley Research Center in Virginia came up with the same results. Wong studies net flux of solar energy at the top of our atmosphere. From the 1980s to 1990s his team noticed increased amounts net energy when comparing incoming solar energy to what Earth radiates and reflects. Since then, the solar flux has remained the same. Other studies have suggested that the sun's output has decreased in the past few years.

Ummm, NO. The Solar Flux fluctuates in direct correlation to the solar cycle. I hope these people aren't on government grants, but sadly, they probably are.
I think that you have a great suggestion. From all of the reports that I have read, their numbers (the polar bears)are on the increase. In Churchill, Manitoba, they are such a nuisance, they have to trap them and take them to remote areas.
Dam' Global Warming!!!
Maybe something drives atmospheric and ocean temperatures other than AGW and the greenhouse effect theory.
Hint: Check the solar flux chart above.
Ironically, we just did a project on ‘camoflauge animals’ and my daughter picked the artic wolf. She did a diorama and did an EXCELLENT job for a 2nd grader (if I do say so and I only bought the supplies, she did it all herself). We were so excited about this project and learned all about the artic wolf, it’s environment, etc...
Little did I know it was a lead in to the polar bears story. :o(
Kind of a buzzkill. And when I tried to explain it to my daughter how some people disagree with that, she said “Well, how can I believe anything the teacher says then?” and I just let it go. I am going to homeschool I think next year.
Tough call on what to tell her about the honesty of her teacher. I think she needs to know that just like she believes what her teacher tells her, her teacher believes what people are telling the teacher. But the teacher has painted herself into a corner with her thoughts and beliefs, and is stuck holding onto that belief because of pride. Grownups make mistakes too, and their pride can cause them to compound the mistake by hiding it even from themselves.
If home school doesn't work out, Catholic school is a decent alternative. We started our daughter in Catholic school, but after 3rd grade we moved, and it would have been a long drive every day to get her there. The town we moved to is a small town way out in the country, and her teachers have turned out to be comfortingly conservative, and embrace traditional American values.
I live in a very conservative area and have never come across this situation before. I am confused on how to proceed if this is just a rogue teacher, or a trend in the system.
