Hoax EU sculpture by David Cerny sparks diplomatic spat

A hoax artwork which was supposed to celebrate European diversity provoked a full-scale diplomatic incident between Bulgaria and the Czech Republic today.

The sculpture, commissioned by the Czech government to mark their EU presidency, mocked Europe’s national stereotypes, but some governments have failed to get the joke.

Bulgaria has taken exception to its caricature, which depicts the country as a Turkish squat toilet. The country's ambassador wrote formal letters of complaint to the Czech EU presidency and Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, today. Related Links

Officials have demanded that the sculpture be taken down before the exhibit’s public opening tomorrow.

Absolutely the most hysterical part of the work. This guy is a total genius ~ no doubt he will eventually need to seek asylum abroad!

This guy is hysterical. The sculpture is called Entropa. Check out the artist's website. Click on the artist's face and then on the english version at the top of the Entropa description.

Good for a laugh or two.

What do we really know about Europe? We have information about some states, we only know various tourist clichés about others. We know basically nothing about several of them. The art works, by artificially constructed artists from the 27 EU countries, show how difficult and fragmented Europe as a whole can seem from the perspective of the Czech Republic. We do not want to insult anybody, just point at the difficulty of communication without having the ability of being ironic.

Hoax EU sculpture by David Cerny sparks diplomatic spat

The headline conjures up images of shocked and scandalized EUrowussy diplomats wetting their pants, or clawing, scratching, and biting each other, or perhaps even going as far as to slap each other with their manbags...

The Czechs were ready to die defending their nation from Hitler until Britain and France sold them out.

Actually, the artwork was supposed to include artists from 27 EU countries, but the guy did it with a few of his buddies.

Unfortunately, it sounds like fraud as I think he was paid for the piece but didn't meet the criteria.
