Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - audacious
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 01/14/2009

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

audacious • \aw-DAY-shus\ • adjective
1. daring, bold
2. insolent
3. marked by originality and verve *

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

The band has been making original and creative music for well over ten years, but their latest album is by far their most audacious to date.

Did you know?
Shakespeare used "audacious" seven times in his plays. That in itself wasn't exactly an act of bold originality. The word, which comes from the Latin root "audac-" ("bold"), had been around for decades. But the Bard was the first to use "audacious" in its "insolent" sense ("Obey, audacious traitor; kneel for grace," Henry VI Part 2), and he may have been the first to use the adverb "audaciously." "Audacious" itself was something of an innovation in the 16th century: it was one of the earliest "-acious" words in English. Subsequently, we've added lots of "-acious" adjectives to our lexicon, including "pugnacious," "loquacious," "voracious," and even, in the 19th century, "bodacious" (which is most likely a combination of "bold" and "audacious").

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Well, neither are Brooks or Kristol.

Look, the locusts who wrecked our party are now flocking to the Dems, where they will, no doubt, wreck them too.

How utterly audacious that Barack Obama intends
to be sworn in as POTUS using Abraham Lincoln’s bible!

I don’t know about luck. He’s only the greatest comic actor of the age. His “Blackadder” series is perhaps the best comedy of all time. It’s certainly in the tops of my list.

Then with Mr. Bean he turns 180 from the verbal, witty comedy to virtual silence.

Well, its those politically friendly, yet unsupportive Asian nations, not like Japan or the Philippines, but those audacious countries, like China, that are such a problem for us these days.

LOL!!!!!

I just personally think prosecution for people putting clothing on their dogs is a bit far reaching for even nannystaters.
