Honorable Mention to Al Michaels -- Do you believe in miracles! Yes! And then he went quiet. How many of today's media personnel would have done that.
Man, looking at what Vin has done over the years is remarkable. The BoSox/Mets, Nicklaus at the ‘86 Masters, Kirk Gibson off of Eckersley, and those are just I remember as a kid. He’s been involved in some of the most memorable games ever. No-brainer that he’s number one. I’m lucky to have grown up listening to him.
Phil Rizzuto (RIP) was a great guy, and was amusing to listen to. But he shouldn't be on the list.
Howard Cosell (#5) is the most overrated sportscaster of all time. The schmuck knew next to nothing about sports. Any sport. He shouldn't be anywhere near that list.
And Bil Walton (#39)? Hoooorrrrible selection.
I was an intern in the news room, and it was kind of cool getting to meet and work with people that I had heard on the radio all the time.
But when Jack Buck walked into the studio, I was absolutely starstruck. He introduced himself to me, as if I needed an introduction, and he ended up buying a pizza for me and the other interns.
By that time, he was not in good health, but he was extremely gracious and respectful. He treated me like a colleague, and I was just a silly news intern.
I've also run into Joe around town a couple times. He's also a very straight forward guy. And one of the things I enjoy about the way he does the Cardinals games is that it's really like being at a game with a friend. Sometimes you're talking about the game, but every now and then something that you might see in the ball park that makes you think of something besides baseball.
I wouldn't go so far as to try and rank any of these guys, but I think the Bucks are truly a St Louis treasure.
"I see we have a loving couple sitting in the stands a few rows down from us here in the radio booth,,,looks like he kisses her on the strikes, and she kisses him on the________"
Uh, outs, yea that's it, the outs.
The most fun to listen to, if not always the most accurate or articulate (at least in the king’s English) were the combination of Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese.
I didn't see the name "Waite Hoyte" on the list. Ridiculous!
I’m partial to the Dallas Stars announcing team of Ralph Strangis/Darryl ‘Razor’ Reaugh. They’ve really helped the Stars make it here in Dallas IMHO, they’re so good, that they are simulcast on the radio and TV for Stars games.
Whoa Nelly! Where, pray tell, is Keith Jackson?
okay, I missed I missed that. Thanks
“When you listened to Jack Buck call a football game on the radio, you might as well have been watching it...”
Mucho dittos . . . well said . . . used to listen to Hank Stram and Jack Buck instead of that lunatic Howard Cosell years ago for Monday Night Football . . .
Nowadays, with the radios stations way out of sync with the broadcast games (not sure why they do that), it’s hard to shake the TV dudes.
I also have a great respect for Don Crichi (not sure how to spell his name).
My all time favorite was Curt Gowdy. Red Sox baseball and the AFL games he did with Al DeRogatis were the best memories I have of radio and televised sports.
You’re completely correct. Your Mojo is workin’!
Grew up listening to Lindsey Nelson do Notre Dame football
Looks like Ernie Harwell and Dick Vitale both made the list.
You're entirely correct, and his recent injection of his liberal political diatribes into his radio show repel me to the point I cannot watch or listen to him.
Having said that, however, he did have a moment that I recall frequently with some amusement. In the Dodgers' locker room following their victory in the 1988 World Serious, Costas interviewed the Dodgers' President and then their manager, the bombastic Tommy Lasorda. Costas turned to Tommy and simply said, "You don't need a question. Make your statement."
Vinny ROCKS!!
Not a woman in bunch... as it should be.
