Very little has been written about President-elect Barack Obama's mother Stanley Ann Dunham's time here in Seattle. Brief articles and even briefer accounts from schoolmates make the person who was the most influential person in Obama's life all the more intriguing. A single mother who enrolled in the University of Washington in 1961 and signed up for 1962 extension program, she likely came across many social prejudices in the predominantly all-white campus.
Perhaps Ann Obama felt more at ease in the diverse neighborhood of Capitol Hill, which housed many students from the neighboring colleges.
Recently located was a listing for Stanley Ann Obama in the 1961 Polk directory at the Seattle Public Library: "Obama Anna Mrs studt h516 13th Ave. E. apt. 2"
So it seems there is no denying the fact that the next president of the United States' had a residence here in Seattle on Capitol Hill Seattle, albeit as a diapered infant.
The apartment house was in the 500 block of 13th Avenue East between East Republican and Mercer streets, but it no longer exists.
This 1937 photo of the apartment house shows a three-story, 21-room house. Stanley Ann Obama and an infant Barack, it is believed, lived on the second floor.
Of note, Roy Olmstead, 76 ¬¬- Seattle's famous bootlegger - lived just up the block at 535 13th Ave. E. And Bruce Lee was then attending the University of Washington at the same time as Stanley Ann Obama.
So drive by and take a look at the neighborhood and when you pass by an infant, stop and say hello. You never know, one of these kids could grow up to be the next president of the United States.
And any future president coming out of that neighborhood will be just as liberal as Obama. That’s a given.
Thank-you kindly Fred! Glad someone has more agile arms than I do!
obama was born August 1961. In Hawaii? Stanley Ann listed in a 1961 Seattle directory. Something sure doesn’t add up.
You are missing the point of the article that shows the fairytale Jr “wrote” is nothing but a lie, as have been so many articles published in various places!
What I would like to know is - when was the information for the directory gathered and when was it printed. Stanley Ann must have been living there either before or during the time she was pregnant.

no it does not, it never did add up
All I know is that cut off date for inclusion in the directory is Oct.10th, I don’t know when the information was collected, although from my experience it was collected from May through June for the directory where I used to live.
Ann had Jr wih her all the time she was in WA state until her return to HI in early 1963. Didn’t you notice the complete absence of infant photos? No first time grandparent would try to avoid taking as many pictures as possible of their first grandchild, unless that grandchild was not near where the grandparents lived!
When they show me a picture of her with her new baby sitting on the apartment house step with a dated newspaper, I'll call the matter cleared up.
Look up the 1960 census records.
dunno, sorry...but we are getting closer to the answer.
Thank you Chief, there are so many lies they are hard to sort out. In the end bo will probably whine and claim he only knew what his pinko mom and old toot told him
Need some PI’s. Good ones
My childrens' birth were published in the local newspaper. Has anyone checked to see if perhaps Hawaii was doing that also.
LOL His entire story is a fairytale but he had to have known his mother was a consumate liar! I must point out that the cut off date of Oct 10th for inclusion in the directory is for now, it may have been in the spring for fall release back in 1961. I also believe that great aunt Virginia’s story of Ann being born in WA state is very close to the truth but she meant Jr and named the state closest to where he was actually born!
Uh, one more thing...Why no pictures of Mommy and Daddy?? No wedding pictures?? No Mommy, daddy and baby??
When approached “The Honoulu Advertiser” mentioned what the criteria are for printing birth announcements now, they didn’t contact anyone who worked at the papers back in 1961. The mere registration of a birth would have generated the birth announcement. I have a feeling the story great Aunt Viriginia told of Ann( instead of Jr) being born in WA state is close to the truth using the state closest to where Jr was actually born.
Aaaaaaaaaaa so Columbo! Now you are beginning to realize about the absence of photos!
