Carlton deserved the nod into the Hall of Fame based on the 1972 season alone.
How can you be a 27-game winner, on a team which had only 54 victories ALL YEAR!!!???
And please, how do you say that Bert is only known for longevity, but that Perry (with his spitter emery cloth forkball), deserves the Hall?
...and why not Lee Smith? Didn't he have enough saves?
Cheers!

Hmm, didn't Bill Buckner figure in there somewhere, or is my memory failing me?
And don't forget Bill Lee -- "with Skylab falling, you have to pitch faster."
And the "inside story" about Carlton Fisk's home run. The cameraman inside the Green Monster was telling the producer "The big rat is looking at me!"
Cheers!

Except pitchers.
And Brooks Robinson was a *way* better fielder.
Cheers!

Do you mean Elrod Hendricks?
He had a perfect 0.00 ERA as a pitcher for the Orioles -- during a game when they got shellacked 24-10 by the Blue Jays.
(He was a catcher who was thrown in to pitch, IIRC, after even the center fielder, Larry Harlow, got chased to the showers.)
Cheers!

According to Bill James
Historical Baseball Abstract that uses a statistical analysis, the top ten are;
1. Babe Ruth
2. Honus Wagner
3. Willie Mays
4. Oscar Charleston (Negro Leagues)
5. Ty Cobb
6. Mickey Mantle
7. Ted Williams
8. Walter Johnson
9. Josh Gibson (Negro Leagues)
10. Stan Musial
Sorry. Elrod didn't make the list.
Now people can argue with Bill James, but you better bring a high-powered calculator and a couple of MIT Math PhD's along with you.

The answer to Henderson still playing ball was already answered at post #23.
