Patrick Swayze Hospitalized for Pneumonia

Patrick Swayze checked himself into the hospital this morning suffering from a bout of pneumonia, which is said to be a complication of chemotherapy treatments for his pancreatic cancer.

Swayze appeared on television this week, giving an exclusive interview with Barbara Walters about his battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Swayze was scheduled to join his fellow co-star and producers in presenting A&E's new drama The Beast to critics, which he stars in. After realizing he would be too ill to make it, according to A&E reps, Patrick asked that the show go on and that they pass along a message from him about how "unbelievably proud" he is of the work they've done so far on the show.

"You can bet that I'm going through Hell," Swayze recently told Walters. "And I've only seen the beginning of it. There's a lot of fear here. There's a lot of stuff going on. Yeah, I'm scared. Yeah, I'm angry. Yeah, I'm asking, 'Why me?'"

I changed my account at one point.

Bzzzzt..........we have a loser.

Every n00bie says this. I started FReeping in the 1920's too but I changed my account.

BTW, we should stop as you invoked Godwin's Law.

I don’t smoke, drink and live a healthy life, yet have systemic lupus with early stage renal failure — go figure (oh, and I manufacture cholesterol while my husband has too low cholesterol and we eat the same diet).. and as I mentioned earlier there is a spate of pancreatic cancer locally that has doctors actually looking for it in their patients.

Exactly.

Again, it is a risk factor which may or may not be a cause.

Quitting smoking now will not cure the disease but would help his treatment.

Patrick has to find peace with himself and if he finds comfort in the smoking then he should enjoy it as Warron Zevon enjoyed every sandwich.

Sometimes it is just better to let sleeping dogs lie and get back to the original discussion.

Smoking causing pancreatic cancer is also the politically correct blame. There are people dying of cancer that have never smoked.

I understand but with so many people if one is hit with a stray bullet and smoke it was because one smoked. Smoking is blamed for everything real or imagined.

If proof, not guesses, can’t be provided it is one thing for Swayze to “guess”; it is bad form for others to do so.

At this point it may boil down to the stress he would put his body through in quitting vs what he would gain from quitting. They won’t let him smoke in the hospital and I know more than one person who actually managed to quit after they were hospitalized for a week or so. At the very least stopping would help him gain a little weight.

Exactly so.... I know someone who died of lung cancer who never smoked a day in her life and another who had lung cancer who never smoked. If I recall Christopher Reeves wife died of lung cancer and never smoked.

However, the reason Swayze said it was probably a mitigating factor is it is generally recognized that Chronic tobacco abuse is the only consistently accepted. environmental risk factor for pancreatic cancer...

It is easy for any of us not in his condition to say what we would or would not do. I took my Uncle last Friday to another chemotherapy treatment. I never cease to be amazed at the willpower of cancer patients and their positive outlook on life.

That’s the thing. He thinks his illness may be caused by his smoking. What about the man or woman (and a family member of mine) who did not smoke or drink and gets this type of cancer anyway?

As for protecting or speaking up for other FReepers who are attacked for no reason, I get that. And Eaker is one of the few who did that for me. You’re wrong about him. You won’t meet a better poster here than him. I can assure you, strong women don’t scare him...his wife is a strong woman, too.

Anyway, I have enjoyed Swayze in many movies. And it’s not often we see hollywood celebrities stay married for so long. I wish him and his family well during this time.

I must have missed the attacks on another FReeper.

FR is a much more hostile forum these days. I have some thoughts on what might have caused this increase of personal attacks on others and may write a vanity on it one day. :)

Ruling out genetics. What about car exhaust? There are all sorts of environmental fumes. And there are toxins in our food through additives etc. I still say it's the politically correct answer. (And no, I'm not saying that smoking is safe or healthy.) Usually finding a cause leads research to a cure. They aren't even close. And cancer is a huge money maker.

My husbands friend had cancer. They took some of his own stem cells, cleaned them and reintroduced them. His cancer was gone. They decided to do chemo and radiation "just to be sure". They killed his liver. He still was cancer free when he died of liver failure. Absolutely stupid and barbaric.

I have a friend who had Colon Cancer return to the liver and her oncologist in NH did the same thing; the grew the cells and reintroduced them like a vaccine, after the treatment was over they did the scratch test (think TB Scratch test) and she mounted a reaction which means the treatment worked, she is alive today. This is a form of homeopathy -- like cures like -- and I hope it gets a lot more attention in research. I saw where it was tried on a woman with brain cancer, but her cancer was too agressive and grew faster than they could grow the necessary cells to inject back into her body.

What my friend told me was the problem was breaking the barrier to get to the disease and not destroy other cells, he oncologist me a chemist at a seminar who took and interest and worked with him on this barrier issue and it worked. She said he told her that his treatment only works on secondary metastasis however.

Russ had multiple myeloma. I’ve heard of other cases of cleansed stem cells working. I just don’t understand the love affair with chemo and radiation. I also have heard of “seed” radiation that is more precise in specific area treatment and that it is successful on some cancers. Treatments are getting better and more exact. Unfortunately the old joke “if it doesn’t kill you it will cure you” still holds true for most cancer treatments.
