Eric Mangini, fired by the Jets 10 days ago after a disastrous end to the season kept them from the playoffs, was not unemployed for long.
The Cleveland Browns announced Wednesday that Mangini would become their head coach, replacing Romeo Crennel, one of his closest friends in football. Mangini is expected to be introduced at a news conference Thursday by the Browns, who became the first of six N.F.L. teams to fill its head-coaching vacancy.
The quick rebound for Mangini came despite speculation that he might have trouble finding work again after he was blamed for turning in his mentor, New England Coach Bill Belichick, in the videotaping scandal that became known as Spygate during the 2007 season.
But Randy Lerner, the Browns owner, interviewed Mangini the day after he was fired by the Jets, and Mangini immediately became the front-runner. Among others who were interviewed for the job were Josh McDaniels, the Patriots offensive coordinator, and Steve Spagnuolo, the Giants defensive coordinator.

What, my tagline isn’t clear enough?
Is this the same NFL that MY Cowboys play in?........
I am surprised Billick didn’t get a call. I don’t think he was ever seriously considered.
This "speculation" could have only come from Pats fans. Nobody else likes Belichick and EVERYBODY knows that Belichick is a cheater.
Except for the Detroit Lions...
yeah, but last time I checked the Cowboys have multiple SB wins and Hall of Famers out the wazoo....
Presser starting now.
One of Randy Lerner’s assistants said like 5 words before introducing Eric. First, Eric took us down memory lane, talking about those great days he had as a PR INTERN.
It was a brief 5 minutes talking before taking questions. He had nice things to say about Brett, saying he wanted to be one of the guys in the clubhouse. He said that he played an integral role in the days leading up to acquiring Brett.
No decisions made yet, contrary to initial reports that he was bringing Jets QB coach Davall and Raiders Def. Coord. Ray Ryan with him today.
that’s the whip cream on top of horsesh!t- bringing in the Jets QB-coach as the offensive coordinator...I mean he’s had such great success and a track record the past two seasons coaching Farve, Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens...
I’m sorry for you Browns fans...I really am....
He threw like 9 interceptions in their last 5 games. Yes the collapse can be blamed on Favre. Were there other problems? Sure. But Favre was stinking it up out there down the stretch.
It’s a good fit, he was Cleveland’s ball boy when Belichick was the coach. >:-}
