Free Republic Thread of BUY THIS GAME! (Video game recommendation thread)
NA | December 31,2008 | Self

I thought it might be useful to have a thread for game recommendations.

Thread suggestions:

While popular games like Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metal Gear Solid 4 deserve every bit of attention they've received, I can't think of a gamer that doesn't know of their existence. Let's focus on the hidden gems and lesser known games.

Let's not get into system wars. The Wii, 360, PS3, PC and Mac all have their own must-have games. If you're a hardcore gamer, odds are good that you own all of these platforms anyway, so please keep your stoney, ninthing, and xbot biases to a minimum.

That out of the way... Let's begin!

LostWinds - Wii

Exclusive to the Wii's Wiiware service, this unique platformer uses the Wiimote in a creative way. Instead of controlling your character, you control the wind. The game is very short, but is sold at a reasonable downloadable price. A sequel is in the works.

Hotel Dusk - DS

Miss graphic adventures? Then play this game. You control Kyle Hyde, a cocky ex-cop, on his path to uncover the mystery behind a hotel. With a good story (by video game standards anyway) and fun gameplay, this is a must purchase.

Valkyria Chronicles - PS3

This TRPG is absolutely gorgeous. Set in a fictionalized take on 1930s Europe, you battle in a storybook atmosphere with a beautiful soundtrack. It suffered absolutely pathetic sales with only 33,000 copies sold during its debut month in the US, so do your part and support good games by picking this one up!

Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure - Wii

While it may look 'kiddie', this adventure/puzzle game provides lots of entertainment for older gamers.

I developed a little trick in Starfleet Command. I go superduper fast and use the phasers as single shot cannon. It becomes almost like Asteroids on steroids with Star Trek theme music in the background. It’s a blast even if you don’t win.

Second the mention of Left4Dead. Awesome game. I liked the fact that I could play on a team with my son—he’s very good at these things, so he was able to take up any slack in my performance, but we still got to play together. Actually, he said I was pretty good at it, at least compared to my performance in Call of Duty.

We got a Wii for Christmas, and I downloaded World of Goo from WiiWare. You have to build structures out of these sticky blobs to get from one place to another, but your structures are subject to gravity and general wobbliness (since they’re just made out of sticky blobs). The level I completed tonight required me to alternate building the structure horizontally while attaching balloons to it to keep it from falling down. Excellent puzzle game.

My all-time favorite, though, is Rayman 2 for the Nintendo 64. If they ever make that available through Virtual Console, I’m all over it.

A nice fun game I just bought is Monopoly on the XBOX 360.

Best games of the year for me was Halo 3, Gears of War Two.

A nice fun game I just bought is Monopoly on the XBOX 360.
***I have a strategy that wins 90% of the time on my computer. When all the players have almost all of the property, you offer one of the players a free monopoly for all of the rest of his pieces and as much cash as he will depart with. Then you do the same thing with the next player. On the 3rd player in a 4player scenario, you’ll be trading monopolies, so you go for the cheaper ones versus his expensive ones or whatever he’ll trade with you. At this point, everyone has monopolies but you have most of the cash. Then you build. Now here’s the key: There’s only 32 houses in the game, so you build 32 houses. Cheaper properties are better with a strategy like this 32 houses is 2 monopolies of 3 and 1 monopoly of 2. If you can’t build all 32 houses, you make sure that no one else can add enough houses to go to hotels. Then you collect your cash — the other guys can’t build because there’s no houses. They’re sitting on beautiful monopolies like Marvin Gardens but with one or 2 houses while you have 12 houses on your properties.

This only works against computers. It will work against humans — once. But the cool thing is that after that, you’ll find the humans to be much more willing to trade than before.

Another excellent family game during cold winter days is Scene-it, they have a second edition out now.

I hear NBA 2k9 is pretty awesome as well as Madden 09

Madoff 09 is the best game of all.

I never moved beyond Pong

I made it to Super Pong, which is a surprisingly violent game, given that the two controllers are connected. This gives a distinct advantage to the stronger, more ruthless, player.
