Free Republic Thread of BUY THIS GAME! (Video game recommendation thread)
NA | December 31,2008 | Self

Posted on 12/31/2008 4:47:43 PM PST by NinoFan

I thought it might be useful to have a thread for game recommendations.

Thread suggestions:

While popular games like Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metal Gear Solid 4 deserve every bit of attention they've received, I can't think of a gamer that doesn't know of their existence. Let's focus on the hidden gems and lesser known games.

Let's not get into system wars. The Wii, 360, PS3, PC and Mac all have their own must-have games. If you're a hardcore gamer, odds are good that you own all of these platforms anyway, so please keep your stoney, ninthing, and xbot biases to a minimum.

That out of the way... Let's begin!

LostWinds - Wii

Exclusive to the Wii's Wiiware service, this unique platformer uses the Wiimote in a creative way. Instead of controlling your character, you control the wind. The game is very short, but is sold at a reasonable downloadable price. A sequel is in the works.

Hotel Dusk - DS

Miss graphic adventures? Then play this game. You control Kyle Hyde, a cocky ex-cop, on his path to uncover the mystery behind a hotel. With a good story (by video game standards anyway) and fun gameplay, this is a must purchase.

Valkyria Chronicles - PS3

This TRPG is absolutely gorgeous. Set in a fictionalized take on 1930s Europe, you battle in a storybook atmosphere with a beautiful soundtrack. It suffered absolutely pathetic sales with only 33,000 copies sold during its debut month in the US, so do your part and support good games by picking this one up!

Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure - Wii

While it may look 'kiddie', this adventure/puzzle game provides lots of entertainment for older gamers.

Keep in mind that I’m basing that on my kid’s recommendation...but I have to say the gameplay looked fun even in the early stages of the campaign style play. The game play appears to diverge away from the movie plot quite a bit.

Spiderman 3 also diverges away from the movie. It uses a map of Manhattan that has the locations of mission opportunities on it. You click on a mission, get way points so you can swing over to the mission site, and you accomplish a list of objectives. For example, my son started a series of missions last night that are part of a new story involving The Lizard. Plus, the opening intro for the game talks about a brewing gang war.

The coolest part? Bruce Campbell narrates. Bruce is awesome.

Sounds like Spiderman 3 diverges from the movie quite a bit. Hmm, kinda odd, but if it’s done well, there’s nothing wrong with that.

Ubisoft Montreal, the game studio that’s done all the latest POP games just turns out stunning looking games. The artwork that goes into the characters and the landscapes is just beautiful.
My only beef with the latest POP was that it takes a good part of the game to learn how to properly chain fight combos together depending on who your fighting against, so the fights are very boring and longwinded through most of it. They simply don’t give you enough different characters through the game to get really good at it. Yes, it plays very easy for the most part. It was giving me flashbacks of playing Dragon’s Lair in arcades when I was a teenager.
But besides that, the landscapes are stunning and new storyline of the character was very well done.

PS3 : Warhawk!!!! Great online combat game. It does take a while to get used to. You can fight as a trooper, tank driver, pilot...it has it all. You can get it for $30 new now (typically $20 used). I assure you that you’ll have fun :-). Also, if any freepers play this, please PM me as I’d like to set up a clan or possibly join your’s. My clan is currently called [AIDS] (long story) but I am more than willing to change that :-)!

There’s a new version of Punch Out coming on Wii. I hope they do a good job modernizing this title as I loved both the arcade versions as well as the console versions.

Baldur's Gate II

Best RPG ever.

If you think so highly of Baldur's Gate II, then you should REALLY try to find a copy of the masterpiece known as Planescape: Torment. It was developed by Black Isle Studios, who also developed the Baldur's Gate series (In fact, Torment uses the same Bioware Infinity game engine to operate). As good as Baldur's Gate II is (and BGII is fantastic), Torment surpasses it and transcends to a whole new level.

It is completely unlike any other RPG ever made (intentionally). For example, the one attribute most people have learned to ignore in classic RPG's, Wisdom, is the most important one in Torment. Conversation (and actual role playing the character) is equally and for much of the game far more important than the combat.

I love RPGs and out of all of them I've played, Torment is by far the best of the best. Nothing I've played since Torment (in 1999) has left me with as great a satisfying RPG experience.

I was totally addicted to Pong.

I never was much into games but one I always enjoyed was an old (late 80ish)Texas Instruments game called Alpiner. I could play it for hours.

Right now he’s fighting a street gang composed entirely of goth girls.

That sure wasn’t in the movie!

Anybody else try GTA 4?

Yes, it's fun for the same reason e thothers are (vast sandbox freedom), but it's a little different than San Andreas.

The focus was more on realistic graphics, so the GTA4 universe isn't nearly as vast as San Andreas (more like Vice City in size). Also, there isn't too much you can do with your money; you can't buy properties and clothes and weapon options are more limited. I felt it took a little of the fun out of finding ways to make money.

Then there is a social aspect of the game, where you acquire friends and girlfriends who have rewards to offer. To unlock the rewards, you have to take them out drinking, go bowling, play darts, ect. After you've unlocked the reward though, you still have to maintain the friendship, and it gets annoying when you're trying to do your own thing and you're constantly getting phone calls inviting you out.

All and all, it's still a great game, but if you want something more similar to San Andreas, I'd highly recommend Saint's Row 2.

Starfleet Commmand is fun!! I just got a used copy of Star Trek: Bridge Commander, and have been playing that for the first time, I love it. It’s better then Starfleet Command imo, however Starfleet Command is still fun to play. I also like Half Life, Half Life 2, Quake 2 and 3, and Call Of Duty. I still play Doom every once in awhile too, lol.

If you have a system that can run Direct X 10 well S.T.A.L.K.E.R Clear Skys is a rather fun game. The graphics are very nice on a somewhat powerful system.

Bioshock for 5.00 from steam is also a good deal for the PC gamer on a budget.
