WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A number of atheists and non-religious organizations want Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony to leave out all references to God and religion. President-elect Barack Obama will use the Bible Abraham Lincoln used for his inauguration. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Washington, the plaintiffs demand that the words "so help me God" not be added to the end of the president's oath of office. In addition, the lawsuit objects to plans for ministers to deliver an invocation and a benediction in which they may discuss God and religion. An advance copy of the lawsuit was posted online by Michael Newdow, a California doctor and lawyer who has filed similar and unsuccessful suits over inauguration ceremonies in 2001 and 2005.

And Obama, in a spirit of goodwill and compromise, will agree that while he still will have the prayers, he will forego the oath to God in carrying out the responsibilities of his office, thus freeing himself to disregard those he doesn’t want or believe in. It’s a win-win for him.

If you believe there is a God or believe there isn't a God, you still have belief. So why are atheists trying to have the government adopt their belief? I thought that was unconstitutional.

By the way, Newdow is the most articulate mentally deranged person I have ever seen.

You know, I’m accepting the fact that we will be governed by the godless for the next four years, anyway. They may as well just go whole hog from the git-go. *SHRUG*

So help me, God! (WE’RE gonna need him more than 0bama; he’s already signed on with the opposition.)

Obama already thinks he is God.

He will simply alter it to be: “So help me, Me.”

Freedom OF religion (not equal to) Freedom FROM religion.

Freedom of religion (not equal to) Preventing others from practicing their religion, or mentioning God.

All you pissed off atheists, please send all coinage and bills to my address. I don’t want you getting upset at all that money, I will gladly remove that source of pain for you.

Michael Newdow lives in Sacramento, not Elk Grove as the media insists. He’s one of my neighbors and is a total ass who drives his SUV up on the sidewalk to get his mail. Anyone wanting his address pm me and I’ll give it to you.

Freedom OF religion (not equal to) Freedom FROM religion.

Freedom to hold the beliefs you hold includes the freedom to believe there is no God...which is a religion, no?

Atheists are alot like homosexuals. They want attention and acceptance to assuage their self-hatred.

If I thought there was the smallest chance of reasoning with him, I would ask for his address, however, I don't see him accepting anything other than his fanatical, self-serving point of view.

If PEBO would choose to add, “so help me, God” at the end of his oath, it would be PEBO’s personal statement and protected free speech.

“Newdow said references to God during inauguration ceremonies violate the Constitution’s ban on the establishment of religion”

A ban on “references to God” in government functions could not be what the framers intended when they disallowed “the establishment of religion”, because the same people who wrote the constitution routinely opened congressional sessions with a prayer. This law suit is just a further attempt by the left to render the U.S. Constitution meaningless by pushing their “living constitution” concept.

If I remember correctly, the CJOTUS states the oath, which does not include the final sentence. That sentence is usually stated by the person reciting the oath. It is up to the individual, not the Chief Justice.

I dont see a problem.

I gave up reasoning with him a long time ago. I don’t wish him harm, but he’s caused so much ill will with myself and the neighborhood that if the man were on fire I doubt anyone’d bother to pee on him to put it out.
