Several years ago I met an Argentine ex-pat. She came to this country with her husband, who was an American citizen.
She loved Argentina, but realized at an early age that the country was in deep trouble, which is why she decided when only a teenager to marry an American as a way out. She was bitter beyond belief at what “he did to my country.” She never said his name - it was almost as if the act of pronouncing it brought a curse - but I knew she meant Juan Peron. “We were once one of the richest countries in the world but he destroyed us,” she lamented frequently.

Americans who believe that the tragedy of Argentina cannot be repeated here should beware: history plays no favorites; the foolish always find a way to destroy themselves.
