Ice fishing is ubiquitous in Minnesota, home to the largest ice angler population in the nation.
Most of us don't give a second thought when thousands of ice fishing houses and thickly dressed anglers show up each winter on frozen lakes and rivers around the state.
That just happens here.
But it's also what makes us unique.
"Ice fishing is this really distinctive thing of living up north; people who don't live here think it's nutty," said Greg Breining of St. Paul.
And, of course, staring for hours into a faintly illuminated hole bored through the ice is a little bit nutty. But several hundred thousand of us do it anyway.
Breining, 56, a freelance writer, and friend Layne Kennedy, 51, a freelance photographer from Minneapolis, both long noticed that intriguing things happen each winter from Moorhead to Montana and from Maine to Moscow when soft water turns hard.
So, of course, they wrote a book about it.

That’s what it’s all about.
My dad was an ice fisherman in eastern upstate NY. He loved it.
Am moving out that way in Spring... never iced fished but have been told by my inlaws it’s the cat’s pajamas! Looking forward to making the Hop! If it includes scales, bait, and beer, I KNOW I have to try it!
Earl continues slowly sipping his beer, then thoughtfully says, "You better think it over - women like that are hard to find."
Oh yeah, Baby! Love icefishing! I’m still a rookie at it, just started it last winter. We were out Thanksgiving weekend and I caught my limit, even with my Green Hornet. Good supper that night.
Life revolves around iceshacks of my brothers and friends during the winter, even when they’re not out on the ice yet. It’s a great place to hang out, cook food and party. Add snowmobiles to the mix and its heaven.
LOL!
Now, that’s roughing it! Nice pad!
Some guys are reporting 3 - 4 inches of ice on the lake but all open water beyond that. Those guys are the nuts who get stranded on ice flows and have to be rescued by the coast guard.
We just got about 4 inches of snow last night which probably won't help conditions any if it starts to warm up.
here's a good fishing report site for my neck of the woods.....
It was a cold winter day, when an old man walked out onto a frozen lake, cut a hole in the ice, dropped in his fishing line and began waiting for a fish to bite. He was there for almost an hour without even a nibble when a young boy walked out onto the ice, cut a hole in the ice not to far from the old man and dropped in his fishing line. It only took about a minute and WHAM! a large mouth Bass hit his hook and the boy pulled in the fish.
The old man couldn't believe it but figured it was just luck. But, the boy dropped in his line and again within just a few minutes pulled in another one.
This went on and on until finally the old man couldn't take it any more since he hadn't caught a thing all this time. He went to the boy and said, "Son, I've been here for over an hour without even a nibble. You have been here only a few minutes and have caught about half dozen fish! How do you do it?"
The boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarm."
"What was that?" the old man asked.
Again the boy responded, "Roo raf roo reep ra rums rarm."
"Look," said the old man, "I can't understand a word you are saying."
So, the boy spit into his hand and said, "You have to keep the worms warm!"
Ha! I like that. That reminds me of a buddy of mine that always liked to tell hairlip jokes.
We tried ice fishing one year when the bays froze over. Just walked along the beach picking up redfish.
Then the game wardens came and handed out tickets for taking fish without a fishing pole.
You betcha! :)
Truthfully, I do not think I have.
feel lucky.
we got these wierdos here, they’re mostly christian, they hunt, fish, camp, drive large trucks and SUVs, motorcycles, atvs, snowmobiles, love america, and most are pretty fiscally and socially conservative. but since they are union, altho they don’t agree with 90% of what they stand for, they’ve been totally brainwashed to vote democrat.
LOL - yuck.
Why don’t cha move into that “shack” It’s nicer than my place.
Good luck with your ice fishing.
I don’t suppose they still park an old Chevy out on the ice in front of every lakefront bar and take bets on when it falls through do they?
