The Demise of Dating
New York Times ^ | December 13, 2008 | Charles M. Blow

The paradigm has shifted. Dating is dated. Hooking up is here to stay.

(For those over 30 years old: hooking up is a casual sexual encounter with no expectation of future emotional commitment. Think of it as a one-night stand with someone you know.)

According to a report released this spring by Child Trends, a Washington research group, there are now more high school seniors saying that they never date than seniors who say that they date frequently. Apparently, it’s all about the hookup.

When I first heard about hooking up years ago, I figured that it was a fad that would soon fizzle. I was wrong. It seems to be becoming the norm.

I guess that parents that are not concerned about their children since they are going out as a group rather than dating may have a bigger problem on their hands.

Rats... I thought this article would be about biblical courtship as the alternative to increasingly depraved (not to mention socially clueless) dating practices. There is no way this society/culture is going to survive if it can’t even produce stable family relationships. Time to salvage what we can and let the rest of this ‘civilization’ go to H*ll...

I had the same thought. But, instead, the article merely highlights the increasing depravity of our society.

And the author of this article is “Blow.” Gee, how apt.

"When I first heard about hooking up years ago, I figured that it was a fad that would soon fizzle. I was wrong."

That's because you don't recognize decadence when you see it, Charlie. It's a downward spiral. It's not a fad. It's a deadly disease. It's course is destruction. It is relentless, inexorable, and predictable. The honest and wise know it when they see it.

“biblical courtship as the alternative to increasingly depraved”

Actually this is on the rise as well. What I take from this article and from observation is that those in one half will continue into depravity and the other half appears to be moving even more traditional. I would agree with the article that the “traditional” way of dating these past few decades is dying and being replaced by a loose definition of dating and relationship. Those that still practice religion may move back to what was the traditional form of courtship prior to the 60s Social upheaval.

There are people still around who even remember when “dating” wasn’t accepted, and it was instead called “COURTING.”

(back when one was expected to remain faithful to one’s husband/wife, people married for life, abortion wasn’t prevelent, etc...?)

There’s a one-night stand, if I ever saw one.. Problem is, you will have to look yourself in the mirror, eventually, and that could induce severe psychological repercussions. A risk not worth taking.

I never do Internet dating and never go out with someone I met at a bar that night ... might hook up later but only in public places ....

These days it’s really tough - then there’s too many Jewish mom’s trying to hook me up with their son ...

... and absolutely no pilots .... well scheduled airline pilots that is ....

“Her Air Force C-32 costs approximately $15,000 an hour or approximately $300,000 per trip home.”

Contrast the lack of coverage about this in the MSM, with the coverage of Sarah Palin’s (much exaggerated) wardrobe budget of half that amount.

I have no proof Pelosi is using government planes to hook up (even though the plane in question has a private stateroom).

Is not this exactly what most men/boys want?

It is a no win for girls/women for obvious reasons.
The sexually transmitted disease rate will continue to rise dramatically.

This is destructive to families and family values.
This “get pregnant and get a monthly support check from the government” is a bad idea. Children with no father in the house ... It has almost killed black families; and it has destroyed many young people as a result.

Now let me see ... are there any benefits?
Free, casual sex?

You decide.

According to Professor Bogle, it’s: the collapse of advanced planning, lopsided gender ratios on campus

Less than 40 % of incoming college freshmen are male. If you send your daughter to a school that is two thirds female, what would you expect?

My advice: stay out of the public schools and choose your college wisely.

Even dating back in the 50’s and 60’s wasn’t all that healthy. In small towns (and large as well) dating consisted a lot of teenagers going to the drive-in theater, smooching and hugging (or worse), then later cruising the parking lot of the “Dairy Queen” and then another “parking” session on some remote road before taking the girl home by 10:30 PM. Going “steady” and breaking up pretty soon was par for the course. - It led to many “unplanned” teenage pregnancies, not surprisingly. - “Dating” was always a miserable experience to me, and I didn’t date much because, fortunately, back then I wouldn’t have known what sex was if it had jumped up and bit me on the backside. So, when the hugging and kissing got boring for us naive and innocent ones, we just found a way to “break up”.

Re: as they get older, they start to realize that it’s not a good way to find a spouse.

Anyone who doesn’t know this from the start is a pure idiot.
