Erie boy bitten by coyote ( Colorado )
DailyCamera ^ | December 5, 2008 | Laura Snider

Aggressive coyotes are not a new problem for people in Erie. At about this same time last year, several attacks on small dogs were reported, and one woman was bitten as she tried to wrestle her 3-year-old Maltese out of a coyote’s jaws.

But the attack Thursday afternoon on Tony Sandlin was different — he didn’t approach the coyote and he didn’t have a tiny dog on hand, though he was watching out for his 6-year-old brother, Vincent, as they practiced their snowboarding skills on the golf course hill behind their house.

The animal charged Tony at the bottom of the hill when he sat down to take off his snowboard, his mom said. The coyote bit the boy and then circled back around. By the second attack, Tony had his board off, and he hit the coyote with it, according to his mom.

“I think this coyote’s behavior was very strange,” said Jennifer Churchill, spokeswoman for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. “When we say that attacks are very rare, that’s true. But every couple of years, something like this happens.”

Would a hunting rifle count against the number of golf clubs that I’m allowed to carry in my bag?

Because if it does, I’m not sure if I should remove my 2-iron or 7-wood.

Any advice?

Hope they’re giving the kid shots.

Rabies warnings for CO have been all over my dog lists this summer and fall.

I wonder if Jennifer Churchill would be so sanguine if it were her son?

Unless you’re scratch, drop the 2-iron. For a duffer or high handicapper, it’s usually harder to hit than a 1-iron is for a pro.

OTOH, a 2-iron is best for killing Cottonmouths, Copperheads, and Water Moccasins.

YMMV.

I’d drop the 2 iron and replace it with a good pump shotgun. 00 buck on top, and follow up loads of rifled slugs should take care of any coyote problem. You can even put a red dot sight or a low power scope on it, if you want.

“Mountain lions are active year-round,’’ Jennifer Churchill said.

“It’s not unnatural at all for lions to go after people’s pets. We just want people to be aware they are out there, and for them to do what they can to keep their pets safe.’’

I agree. Coyotes are a danger to our very civilization. One of the worst problems this country has. I read about these vicious coyote attacks hundreds of times a year. And most of this problem is caused by that darned Jennifer Churchill.

The reason I know this is because I’ve seen it done.

Years ago, I was playing a round with my Dad on his home course, and we asked two other members who were scheduled to tee off behind us to join us for a foursome.

One of the guys was scratch and he was a thrill to watch. Man, did he hit it long and straight, But on one hole, he hit his tee shot into a little creek tributary that ran along the side of the hole. As he got close to his ball, sitting in the weeds he saw a 4 ft long Cottonmouth. We didn’t see it at first.

He pulled out his 2-iron, even though by that time we knew he could reach the green with a seven. At first, I thought he was mad at himself for hitting into the weeds and water as he suddenly hit almost straight down toward the ground.

A second or so later, though, everything was clear as he used that 2-iron to pull up the nearly decapitated snake.

I tried to memorize his form, in case I ever needed to repeat his deed, but for the rest of the summer, whenever I hit into the water and weeds, I just dropped another ball in the middle of the fairway, and shivered a little as I aimed toward the green.

LOL.

A mountain lion snuck into the master bedroom of an Idledale home early Monday, grabbed a yellow Labrador retriever and vanished.

The home’s owners had left the french doors to their bedroom open.

“A lion that will brazenly go into someone’s bedroom . . . we need to be careful of,” Jennifer Churchill said.

The dog’s body was found near the property.

Jennifer Churchill is part of the problem.

What is it with people surnamed "Churchill" who live in Colorado? They're all barking moonbats.

Oh! the humanity! That poor Coyote could have suffered an inclused tooth or have gotten a virus from that boy! That boy should be put in quarantine to make sure he has no disease or virus that could be fatal to that poor coyote.

“We know there are coyotes out there,” she said. “Please don’t feed them. Coyotes need to regain their natural fear of people.”

Ah, Jenny. You're right about coyotes needing to regain their fear of man but it can be done by feeding them. Just alter the diet by giving them a piece of lead behind the left or right ear, they'll regain their fear of man in a hurry.

I’m not sure if I should remove my 2-iron or 7-wood.

Easy choice for me, George. I never could hit a 2-iron worth a darn, used it for snakes. With a rifle I wouldn't need it for the snakes any longer. :)

I don’t believe anyone said a thing about civilization but ask the boy who was bitten by the coyote and the rabies shots he’s having to take.

Coyotes are one of the most sly and intelligent wild animals living in close proximity to man. They’re responsible for killing and eating many pets, even in residential neighborhoods.

Many people think they’re cute and that it’s wonderful to have them in their neighborhoods. Any coyote in a populated area should be trapped or shot, period. Jennifer was right about coyotes having to regain their fear of man and that’s the only way they’ll do it.

Can Coyotes breed with domestic dogs?

After coyotes killed two dogs and injured a woman here, some residents believe the animals are losing their fear of people...

A man whose wife was bitten said the attack Sunday in a backyard is the latest of several reported in Erie over the last few months ...

Janice Shattuck is undergoing a series of rabies shots.

Shattuck said the coyote that attacked his wife was one of four that showed up in the couple’s fenced-in backyard ...

“There is a certain amount of risk you have to take living near coyotes,” Jennifer Churchill said.
