Help-anyone got suggestions for a toy helicopter gift? (vanity)

Posted on 12/05/2008 11:07:58 AM PST by tpanther

I've been looking at these cool little remote-control toy helicopters for my 12 year old son, but does anyone have any experience with ones to get OR ones to avoid?

I'm worried about getting one that only flies for 5 minutes before it needs re-charging, or breaks sooner than that, or is underpowered etc. etc.

Any insight is much appreciated!

One of the gals in my life watches QVC, and they have one or more of the helicopters on sale. Check out their website. I have no experience or knowledge about their quality.

I got a little chopper for $16 or so. It was good for practice in the house until I figured I could fly a more expensive helicopter.

This link is to a program to help you learn to fly a remote control on your computer. I thought I had a program that I had picked up from freeware, but I can’t find it right now.

Make sure that you get one that can take a crash. It also needs to be steerable. If you can find a play where someone is flying them to get attention at a mall or something, ask to take the controls...if he refuses it’s because the thing will get trashed quickly.

In my experience, the super cheap are bad and the super expensive are too breaky. There are some that auto level and are easy to fly.

My advice: Get two cheap ones, and give the 2nd one to him when the first one gets lost or broken. You’ll be his hero for life!

The “Micro Mosquito” is easier to control than another one we have.

I want one to terrorize my cats with. Any experience with this, anyone?

Yes. Cats are vindictive. Hide your toothbrush before you go to bed. For that matter, try not to sleep while your cats are awake.

But seriously, pets and high-speed rotating blades don't mix.

You should have ordered the camo version like I did - mine still hasn’t been noticed — it just kind of blends in.

You need a bigger ramp, then.

Yes, a true RC helicopter has quite a learning curve and they can be rather fragile. I’d suggest one with dual rotors (each spins in the opposite direction) for a much easier to control beginner helicopter.
