There’s very few time you want to do it because you’re smart. I’m talking the users that are the bane of everyone in the industry, the idjits, the people that use the CD tray as a cup holder, the ones that double click on every stupid thing, the ones that actually install emoticon apps (which of course always have crap with them).
Not hardcore users, they actually know JS. Not the crowd I’m talking about.
Yes the vast majority of Mac user don’t run as root. Already acknowledged that. Most users will be fine. On Windows most users are fine. It’s the dumb ones that make the problems. It’s the dumb ones that are going to run as root even though they don’t have to, even though there’s no good reason to, and double click on the icon they got from the HR person that says ILoveYou and give themselves a virus.
If Macs take over it will happen. I figure if you get up over about 20 to 25% of the desktop space you’ll start getting the influx of dipsticks. The user base keeps expanding but you’re still in single digits. Like I said, wait for it.
Remember, nobody ever went broke under estimating the intelligence of the average person. The most successful virus ever required people to either enable the stupidest feature ever or double on an obviously suspect icon, and 10% of all the computers connected to the net got it. Dumb people are out there, and if the Macs keep increasing the user base eventually they’re going to buy Macs. It’s gonna happen, you just need enough total users for the dipsticks to reach critical mass.
You know..., it’s really funny about these “real serious problems” that some people come up with from time to time. I mean, I’ve had so many different Macintosh models over the years and haven’t been able to every get one to break down for me... what a deal.
In addition to that, I know a bunch of Macintosh users and I have yet to find one that I know how has every had a problem of the sort that some people seem to bring up from time to time.
I’ve had to replace a hard drive a couple of times, but that’s not the computer, itself and is no big deal (especially with constant backups).
I’m sure that there are *some people* who have had problems, but they are in such a minority, that they probably barely even reach a figure of 1/10 of 1 percent — total, if anything at all.
With all the Macs that I’ve had, I really don’t know what it is like to *ever* have a hardware problem...

How are Macs crippled?
True. I’ve had more than enough years of BSoDs, viruses, all sorts of software/hardware conflicts with Windoze that going Mac was a no-brainer.
Clams ain’t kosher! ;-D
I think they’re treyf, too!
So, how are you doing these days?
Ears burning?
LOL!
Thanks for your comments. After 17 years of using windows in too many flavors (some of which sucked bad, most of which just sucked), I am underwhelmed by Microsoft’s ability to get things right even after three versions. Vista is the current example du jour.
So far, I have discovered an extremely stable operating system, applications that do the tasks I require, and the backup of VMFusion to run windows xp, if I run into any application that I “just have to have”. I will do my best to avoid those entirely. And I’m in no hurry. If I’m over in 30-45 days, I’ll be pleased.
I don’t know what to tell you about problems - like a bad power cord. Obviously, if you manufacture millions of anything, you will have some problems. I don’t see Apple as perfect, so I accept that. Microsoft is clearly not perfect either, so that argument falls flat with me.
On the other hand, I will never, ever, ever get back the thousands of hours of my only life that have been devoted to solving the problems Microsoft has created repeatedly through its failures and lousy systems.
To each his own.
“I will never, ever, ever get back the thousands of hours of my only life that have been devoted to solving the problems Microsoft has created”
Simply installing Service Pack 3 wreaked havoc on my system; I had to restore the system to an earlier date and am running without 3 now.
I’ve hated Gates and Microsoft since I had to go to Word from WordPerfect. Word sucks.
My experience with Apple is this: their hardware is essentially commodity parts with some unique, well-thought out gimmicks (the magnetic power cord has probably saved my MBP a lot of spills). But, as with all hardware, it breaks. That's life.
Where Apple shines is customer service. My old-model iPhone died last week, and since they weren't able to get me a replacement, they gave me a free upgrade. Oh, they'll get their money back from me. They ensured that my family will look at Macs first.
Microsoft doesn't do that. Look at how MS handled the Vista fiasco. Instead of realizing they messed up big time, they started the insulting "Mojave" advertisements. As though finding out I can do panoramic pictures will compensate for it being bloated and unstable.
My 17 inch Powerbook G4 had a dead on arrival motherboard, which was promptly replaced and returned to me.
My MacPro 2.6ghz x 4 blew out a Radeon X1900 for some reason.
Those are the only two hardware related issues I’ve had with Macs in my twenty-two years of use and ownership.
I don't work for Apple... I just track down the facts and post them.
Ahhh, the good old days.
How’s everything over there?
