Likely the mountain arose after the city was already there. Just hard to picture even getting food for more than a couple of people to the top of a mountain on a daily basis without modern technology.

My grandfather went to Dartmouth and was a friend of Hiram Bingham. Hiram asked him to be the anthropologist and MD for the National Geographic expedition to begin the digging at Machu Picchu.

The high point in the rear is called "The Hitching Post of the Sun." We have pictures that my grandfather took from there including a shot looking down over 5000 feet to the Urubamba river below.
