Archdale, NC -- It sounds too bizarre to be true, but a local woman fended off a four-legged intruder's attack with a butcher knife.
Nancy Verzone says a loose pit bull first went after her rat terrier in her backyard. When she snatched her dog from the pit bull's jaws, the attacking dog followed her inside.
"Here I was just stabbing just as hard as I could to get him to let go and he kept coming and coming," says Verzone, who has the bloody t-shirt to prove it. "The harder I stabbed the more he got mad," she says.
Randolph County Health Director MiMi Cooper sees the incident as a warning to keep dogs restrained. "Wake up people. You've got to take care of your dogs, you cannot let dogs run loose," says Cooper. "Dogs are predators."
Verzone says her rat terrier was injured so badly, she had her veterinarian euthanize the dog.
The pitbull's owner shot the dog in the head and buried it in his yard. Animal Control later made him dig it up so the dog could be sent to Raleigh for rabies testing. Cooper says because of the bullet wound to the pitbull's head, rabies testing came up inconclusive. Verzone is now receiving rabies vaccinations for her dog bite.
"It was the most heart wrenching thing for me to have to do that to that animal," says Verzone. "But it was either me or him."
The pit bull's owner promised to cover Verzone's rabies vaccination bill. The price tag tops $2400 dollars for a series of at least five shots. WFMY News 2
It's illegal in most areas for felons to own guns. Been that way for a long, long time.
That’s how people who have no respect for the law behave. Fortunately, laws are backed by enforcement and penalties.
LOL
You’re so delightfully nutty...
And felons who are caught violating the law go to jail. Frequently.
Yeah, opposing shooting up neighborhoods over pit bulls is so nutty.
“I own dogs, but I believe pit bulls should be outlawed. It killed that womans little terrier, think what it could do to a toddler. Pit bulls have killed adults or severely injured them numerous times. All this stuff about if you raise them right theyre not violent may be true, or may not, but it seems people who choose pit bulls as pets are the very same types not inclined to raise them right or keep them restrained. Therefore for the public safety, a breed that is proven to be dangerous should be illegal.
“
I just don’t understand the point of one. Are most bad? No. But why own something with that kind of destructive power when there are so many other breeds out there that can provide you companionship without the ability to kill neighbors, your kids, other dogs, etc, etc. These things are dangerous animals. They have amazingly powerful jaws and are bred to not quit.
You may want to check in with your buddy, "familyops" for some refresher talking points. It's seems like you might be straying off the reservation.
“What a crock! There are plenty of breeds that bite and are aggressive but they dont make the news.We dont like pit bulls so PLEASE ,Mr. Government, please protect us from them and make them illegal.”
A poodle can’t rip your arm off. Other dogs do bite and other dogs have bad days but pits combine that with raw power and can do some damage. There is a reason why they top the charts when it comes to fatal attacks. You don’t hear about a biting beagle killing a woman.
I don’t understand the point of barbecue pits.
They’re dangerous and smelly, but I would never try to infringe on the rights of my neighbor to own and operate one.
“Its easier for people to assign malicious intent to a particular breed, so they dont have to deal with the fact that theyre never truly safe, theyll never be safe...That life itself is not safe.
Its the same thing with second hand smoke, trans fat, global warming, hand guns, SUVs...Pick something and focus your fear on that,so you dont have to deal with anything else.”
Of course people are not truly safe. That doesn’t mean you have to take stupid risks. Most dangers can be reduced. Trucks aren’t safe. Am I glad they have to have airbags and seatbelts? Yes.

How often has a BBQ pit walked into a neighbors yard and ripped the face off of a child?
Well, thanks for trying to help me decide which risks are worthwhile and which are not, but I’d rather take care of it myself. :-)
Obviously they haven't, but there are a surprising number of people out there that would (and have) argued for their ban based on the health risk they present. It's the same nanny-stater continuum, albeit just a little further down the line.
“Well, thanks for trying to help me decide which risks are worthwhile and which are not, but Id rather take care of it myself. :-)”
I’m not sold on the goverment deciding. I am sold on the fact that owners of potentially dangerous animals should have to shoulder heavy criminal and financial liability if their precious little bred to kill dog goes off. I’m also quite happy with allowing animal personnel to kill one of these animals the second they show the slightest bit of aggressiveness. Or when it comes to allowing any neighbor to blow one of these creatures away the second it enters his property.
How often have the idiots next door abandoned their barbecue pit (and when I say pit, I mean an actual hole in the ground) and allowed it to burn out unattended?
Many times. It hasn’t reached the fence yet, but I imagine that one day it will.
I’ve got four kids. If they caught the house on fire, would I be able to get them all out safely? I dunno. It scares me.
Does that mean the government should ban barbeque?
Exactly the point I make about alcohol, there are so many other drinks out there that are safe and just as tasty. There is no rational reason for not banning a substance that causes 1000's of deaths, countless disfigurements, family violence, crime, etc, etc. Are there responsible drinkers out there? maybe, but why take the chance of consuming something that taken even in small quantities impairs judgement and coordination. People can not be trusted to act responsibly when consuming alcohol and it's just not worth the risk to the rest of us. Safety trumps individual liberty every time.
My problem is with those who would like to see the feds come into my house and take away my dog because he may or may not look like a pit pit bull to some limp-wristed, panty-waist animal control officer.
Exactly. That's why the laws are needed.
She needs to sue.
