Woman Stabs Pit Bull In Home Invasion
WFMY ^

Posted on 11/22/2008 5:19:40 PM PST by Chet 99

Archdale, NC -- It sounds too bizarre to be true, but a local woman fended off a four-legged intruder's attack with a butcher knife.

Nancy Verzone says a loose pit bull first went after her rat terrier in her backyard. When she snatched her dog from the pit bull's jaws, the attacking dog followed her inside.

"Here I was just stabbing just as hard as I could to get him to let go and he kept coming and coming," says Verzone, who has the bloody t-shirt to prove it. "The harder I stabbed the more he got mad," she says.

Randolph County Health Director MiMi Cooper sees the incident as a warning to keep dogs restrained. "Wake up people. You've got to take care of your dogs, you cannot let dogs run loose," says Cooper. "Dogs are predators."

Verzone says her rat terrier was injured so badly, she had her veterinarian euthanize the dog.

The pitbull's owner shot the dog in the head and buried it in his yard. Animal Control later made him dig it up so the dog could be sent to Raleigh for rabies testing. Cooper says because of the bullet wound to the pitbull's head, rabies testing came up inconclusive. Verzone is now receiving rabies vaccinations for her dog bite.

"It was the most heart wrenching thing for me to have to do that to that animal," says Verzone. "But it was either me or him."

The pit bull's owner promised to cover Verzone's rabies vaccination bill. The price tag tops $2400 dollars for a series of at least five shots. WFMY News 2

...not any more. We cleaned most of them up and moved them out two and three years ago. They headed east. ...just making sure that their kind don’t reappear again for long.

I don’t know, perhaps more than one group of breed fans claims Petey. The breeder that sold me my first AmBull gave me a VHS tape that had a story claiming Petey as an AmBull. Oh well.

I gave you exact quotes from existing statutes.

Yes,and I understand that. Basically any dog that doesn't have a pedigree can be subject to the arbitrary judgement of a random city employee, misidentified and killed if it has any superficial similarities with the pit bull, such as a blunt muzzle, or a long muzzle. A wide, flat or rounded head. A smooth coat, or a rough coat. Drop ears, prick ears or cropped ears. A long tail,or a short tail. A weight of between 20 lbs and 100 lbs. Muscular, lean or obese. Short and stocky or tall and slim. Solid white, black, blue, spotted, speckled, or brindled. You can't effectively ban pit bulls by appearance.

"Those meth users are notorious for packing on the pounds."

Meth users are famous for weighing less than 100 pounds, and usually having no teeth. The teeth are the first thing to go, then the knee and ankle joints, all from rampant infection, because meth shuts down your immune system completely.

Yeah, it’s really a shame to have to carry weapons just to protect good pets and family from a neighbor’s pit bulls. We once had the same miserable situation for a short time.

Nonsense. And as I've quoted to you repeatedly, mechanisms exist for owners to contest the identification.

Luckily I don’t live in a fruitcake part of the country where people go around trying to ban other peoples’ pets. The first ‘pit bull type’ that I was owned by was a Stafforshire Terrier that I picked-up off of the road. She had been terribly injured somehow and I took her to the vet to have her wounds healed and then find her a home. She healed, but wasn’t having any part of that ‘finding a home’. She had already found one with me. She lived to the ripe old age of 15. I miss her to this very day.

Yes, they would have to produce a pedigree or convince litigation-fearing city employees that their dog isn’t a pitbull based solely on it’s appearance. Depending on who complains about your dog and what they told city officials, you could be going up against a brick wall.

It’s great if you trust your government to be compassionate and indulgent, but I know better.

I'll take the judgment of an animal control officer over that of a gang banger.

I live in an area with the same problem. However, I know that restricting my own rights and subjecting my house to more government interference isn't going to solve the problem.

"I'll take the judgment of an animal control officer over that of a gang banger."

How about the judgement of somebody with more experience than your typical animal control officer?

""My kids are around pit bulls every day. In the '70s they blamed Dobermans, in the '80s they blamed German shepherds, in the '90s they blamed the Rottweiler. Now they blame the pit bull." Pit bulls get a bad rap because of irresponsible owners. Many people consider the look or popularity of a breed before thinking about whether the dog works for their lifestyle. Please evaluate your lifestyle before taking on the responsibility of a pit bull."

Sure, I’m a married, born again, homeschooling, conservative mother of four, but my dog’s got some bully in him, so I must qualify.

Sure you must be a thug if you have a pitt. I hear Rachel Ray has one as well. We need to round all you female pitt owners up and send you off to prison before it is too late. ;)

That's why I believe that bounties are a good way to go. ...collected rewards from a cattlemen's association for killing coyotes back east, when I was a teen.
