Archdale, NC -- It sounds too bizarre to be true, but a local woman fended off a four-legged intruder's attack with a butcher knife.
Nancy Verzone says a loose pit bull first went after her rat terrier in her backyard. When she snatched her dog from the pit bull's jaws, the attacking dog followed her inside.
"Here I was just stabbing just as hard as I could to get him to let go and he kept coming and coming," says Verzone, who has the bloody t-shirt to prove it. "The harder I stabbed the more he got mad," she says.
Randolph County Health Director MiMi Cooper sees the incident as a warning to keep dogs restrained. "Wake up people. You've got to take care of your dogs, you cannot let dogs run loose," says Cooper. "Dogs are predators."
Verzone says her rat terrier was injured so badly, she had her veterinarian euthanize the dog.
The pitbull's owner shot the dog in the head and buried it in his yard. Animal Control later made him dig it up so the dog could be sent to Raleigh for rabies testing. Cooper says because of the bullet wound to the pitbull's head, rabies testing came up inconclusive. Verzone is now receiving rabies vaccinations for her dog bite.
"It was the most heart wrenching thing for me to have to do that to that animal," says Verzone. "But it was either me or him."
The pit bull's owner promised to cover Verzone's rabies vaccination bill. The price tag tops $2400 dollars for a series of at least five shots. WFMY News 2
Only I wish that accountability included jail time.
I hate those dogs. And it's time to arrest and try the owners for assault, or attempted murder, who let them hurt people.
LOL...you prefer shooting them, PETA prefers injecting them...but I'm the one with a false analogy because I say you both endorse destroying them?
That's like an abortionist telling somebody he's not aligned with planned paretnhood because he prefers suction and they prefer saline.
Quit nitpicking and complaining. If there are any pit bulls around that refuse to show any sign of being a threat regardless of behaviors of people or animals around them, we’ll spare them. :-)
Sadly, you're right. There are so many irresponsible people who own these dogs. It makes it really difficult for those of us who are responsible and who own stable animals that are a part of our family. Again though, is it really a breed problem or a people problem?
Both. And the dogs are being bred for violent behavior and killing abilities.
He should pay for the costs associated with the loss of her dog as well.
I’ll tell you my story. I have a little black cat. On 16 Augustm08 our neighbors 2 meanie weenies across the street and 3 doors down ,got out of their yard and came into mine and attacked my cat in my garage!!!! My cat spent two days at the pet ER and the next day at my vet and that bill came to more than 1100.00.
We hoped the antibiotics would prevent the abscesses from developing. It didn’t work. Ebonie had some painful tests and then surgery to put into place 2 drains. It took until the end of Sept before the meds and drains were taken out.
The whole bill came to 2007.00. These people paid the first 1000.00 after animal control called and told them to get with it or they could face going to court. They did not want to pay the remainder claiming they were strapped.
We were not going to go along with that but were willing to spread the payments out. In the end their household ins paid up all but the 200.00 we forgave. If the ins had not paid we would have gone to court.
Since then those dogs have been out twice more and in my yard.
This is not the end of the story either. My cat has become very fearful of everything and now is licking her tummy to the point of baldness. She was pretty chewed up..but now I have to figure out what to do next. I would like to pass this next set of bills onto the dog owners too but don’t now if it would stick.
Many are, admittedly, but there are those that aren't. Not by ethical breeders anyway. Personally, I am against breeding pit bulls as the overpopulation of the breed lends more to the problem strays causing too many good stable dogs to be put down.
What’s obvious to most people, is that the profile of a typical pit bull owner is one who lies to get welfare, evades taxes for “child care” credits, is addicted to crystal meth and weighs over 250 pounds.
Yep. Those meth users are notorious for packing on the pounds. I see an obese person, and the first thing I think is, "Now there goes a meth head."
It’s nice to be atypical then. Oh, btw, crystal meth users rarely weigh over 150 lbs, much less 250 lbs.
ROFLOL. That was my thought exactly.
Petey was an American Pit Bull Terrier.

Oh, your AmBull, while beautiful, would be targeted for banning as a “pit bull type”.
You obviously haven’t seen many of the rural meth heads who’ve been busted during the early stages of their addiction. They’re huge. It seems that they like to consume large quantities of sweets, fat, booze and pot along with their meth in order to maintain their careers.
You apparently are far more familiar with the lifestyle than I....not that I'm at all surprised.
You sure do live in a bad area. Ravaging pit bulls everywhere...Obese meth heads...Ever think of moving? I’m just saying...
After pit bulls, his next target will be those obese meth heads. He’s on a mission...
