Father Shoots Neighbor's Pit Bull
cbs, News12 ^ | 21NOV08 | Chuck Weber

Posted on 11/22/2008 3:16:17 PM PST by familyop

A local father shot and killed a neighbor's pit bull. The dog was loose and had followed a child into the dad's home.

Law enforcement says no one will face charges because of the incident-- not the father for shooting the dog in front of children, nor the pit bull's owner for letting the dog get out.

It happened in a quiet neighborhood west of Lantana, the dog shot in the driveway of the home of J.R. Martin. Martin declined comment.

But here's what the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and Animal Control say happened. At least two girls were meeting at the Martin home for a ride to school. The pit bull followed one girl into the house and bit Martin's beagle. Martin first tried to scare away the pit bull with a BB gun, but the dog returned, reportedly growling at the children. Martin took out his .9 mm gun and shot the pit bull. The dog then ran down the street and died.

The shooting upset neighbor Ofelia Cravens. Prior to the shooting, Cravens said her daughter found the dog wandering down the street. Cravens said the pit bull was large, but friendly. Cravens said she and her daughter went up and down the street trying to find out who owned the dog. Cravens even put the dog in her garage for awhile.

"The next thing you hear is a shot," said Cravens. "And that was it. I'm very upset, because I could see if he was vicious dog. But he wasn't."

Cravens added, "I like J.R. And I respect him. But I sure as heck didn't know he had a gun."

Another neighbor tells CBS 12, there had to be a reason for Martin to take such an action.

Animal Control says the pit bull belonged to Fernando and Anna Flores, who live on another street. We were unable to reach the couple.

Thank you. You said it better than I. Those cop shooting the family dog stories always disgust me too. The worst part is that almost always the cops enjoyed it.

You’re kidding, right?

The pitbull bit the man’s beagle, followed his daughter into the house, and after having been shooed away once, came back and growled at the girls.

Was he supposed to keep his girls inside for the next two months, wondering if that dog might come out of nowhere?

That’s enough.

Nah. The 11 grain bullet, traveling at 14,000 FPS would work just fine.

Friendly dog?

“The pit bull followed one girl into the house and bit Martin’s beagle.”

I doubt that the poor beagle thought it was friendly.

...reportedly growling at the children.

Did you miss that part?

Yes, of course. Shoot them all. Don't wait. Don't call animal control or the sheriff's office. Just kill them. That's the best thing to do. How did I miss that exquisite logic?

All I'm saying is that the story doesn't sound quite right and JR's problem solving skills are questionable. But hey, if you believe it as it is written, then who am I to question it?

The dog was likely reacting to the other dog. While he may have been legally within his right to shoot the dog, it could have been handled better.

It always disgusts me when the cops shoot fido, who is defending his territory and they have questionable reasons to be trespassing.

Go back and read the story.

The pit bull came into this man's house and bit his dog, then menaced his kids. He tried to shoo the animal out with a BB gun, but the menacing continued. He only used deadly force when the animal did not respond to non-lethal persuasion.

And "Fido" wasn't defending his territory. He came from at least a block away, and was NOT shot by the cops.

“Don’t wait for animal control”

Shooting a “large, friendly” dog in your driveway can’t be much harder than shooting cats off grandma’s sofa.

Question it all you want.

I just don’t agree with you in this case, that’s all.

Cravens added, “I like J.R. And I respect him. But I sure as heck didn’t know he had a gun.”

You do now, dimwit.

Good shoot.

The pit bull followed the kid into the house and bit the homeowner’s beagle. I woudn’t wait for it to bite the kid.

You’d be better off stabbing the pitbull with a #2 pencil...

They just proved to you that either you did not understand the article, or that you are a wacko. Either way, your answer avoids answering the fact they presented, and you go off on ‘shoot them all’.

I miss read the story. I'd have dropped the dog under that circumstance myself, just not with a 9mm. The Fido comment was actually about another story that was circulating yesterday where trigger happy cops stopping to ask for directions were growled at by the family pooch and shot and killed the family dog in their driveway.

According to GBA, you should give the dog a chance to prove his good intentions, or bite(kill) a child, while you call animal control.

That’s fair. We don’t have to agree. I’ve been wrong before about not trusting the press to get the facts right. None the less, the story just doesn’t sound quite right to me, though it would appear from the comments I’ve gotten that I’m about the only one who thinks so.

The other night I pulled into my driveway coming home from work. It was dark...and as I locked the car I walked around the back of the car. I was met by a pitbull looking dog that I had never seen before....and he was coming at me.

He growled at me..and I stopped and stared at him..and took an aggressive step towards him. He backed off a couple steps...I knew I had him then..and ran at him yelling..and he ran off.

If I would have had my pistol I would have shot him.

Don't call animal control or the sheriff's office

I generally carry a gun...because I can't carry the local sheriff.

Ever see that tag-line...?

There's a reason for it............
