The opening day of firearm deer season drew many students out of area schools and into the woods Friday.
Jacksonville High School lost 20 students to the call of the hunt Friday, according to Principal Kurt Spilker.
They had to bring in their permit and show it to us, Mr. Spilker explained. Its still an absence, but its an excused absence.
At North Greene High School, 40 students were missing Friday, and although high school secretaries couldnt say for sure how many of the absences were hunting related, the women were sure that many of the no-show students were out with their shotguns Friday.
The high school secretary at A-C Central said there were at least six hunting-related absences Friday. At A-C Central, students can have the day excused if they count it as their one personal day per semester.
The Beardstown School District doesnt hold school on Friday. Superintendent Robert Bagby could not be reached for comment on whether the decision was hunting related.
Bluffs School reported 40 students absent from class Friday, and Franklin High School reported about 45 students missing from sixth- through 12th-grade.
That high number is about exactly the same percentage as absences last year, Franklin High School Principal Adam Ehrman said. All those absences arent for hunting. Weve had a lot of kids sick lately, he said.
Triopia Junior/Senior High School reported no spike in absences Friday. That is probably because attendance is a must for participation in the Trojans playoff football playoff game Saturday against Salt Fork. Triopia is one win away from playing in the state football championship.
Winchester and Waverly reported 10 to 15 students absent from their high schools Friday but did not break down of how many of those missing were believed to be out hunting.
“Probably out deer hunting with his buddies.”
It took 45 min to restore order.
That is the best e-mail I received all week.

These posts are cool, but how about a state listed in the title?
I was going to do that, and I forget. Sorry. Illinois.
I’ll take blonds for $500. Alex.
What a great story. If that was California they’d have the parents in front of a judge looking to take the kids away.
I’m continually finding that historians don’t realize the school year was connected to “farming”.
At least they are doing and learning something that will enable their survival.
Kids get one personal day per semester over there?
I hate NYC
The school secretary doesn’t seem to know that you don’t hunt deer with a shotgun. Turkeys, but not deer.
Ever heard of 00-buckshot?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... deer hunting season with shotgun is in full tilt here. Slugs are used.
Slugs, yes. Who wants their deer meat full of buckshot?
Most folks I know round here use 30.30’s.
Here’s hoping my youngest gets another one this year.
Last year we had to grease the sides of the door for his head to get through!
If you want to fill your freezer you get permits ....permits for state land lottery ...state land no-lottery...Private Land Shotgun/Rifle ...State and private Land Muzzleloader, archery, shotgun ....doe and buck ...and every other kind of permit they can dream up ... Migratory Bird Conservation Stamps, pheasant tags .... phew! I can’t keep track. But having food supplies put away is satisfying.
Hope your son has some luck this year ... we have 2 hanging so far, waiting to go to the butcher. ;)
