Governor Palin Receives, Solicits Applications for Vacant Senate Seat

March 9, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin is encouraging registered Democrats who reside in Senate District B and would like to serve in the Alaska State Senate to submit a letter of interest to the Office of the Governor. The seat, which represents the Juneau area, is vacant following the resignation of Democrat Kim Elton last week. The Office of the Governor has already received more than two dozen unsolicited recommendations and applications for the seat.

“We know there are many qualified Alaskans who would fill this post enthusiastically,” Governor Palin said. “I appreciate those who believe in public service and would like to serve in this capacity.”

Palin is accepting additional public input concerning the seat after the local Democratic organization broke from the recent tradition of submitting the names of three people for the governor to consider. The party sent her just one name. The governor has 30 days from Elton’s resignation to fill the vacancy. The Alaska Senate Democrats must approve the governor’s selection which is due by April 1.

Interested parties should send a resume and letter of interest to the Office of the Governor, P.O. Box 110001, Juneau, AK 99811-0001. Deadline for submissions is close of business on Friday, March 13.
