Guess I’m glad I watched Mythbusters last night? I did DVR it, was planning to go downstairs to watch it as soon as my coffee was finished. Guess I will anyway, as it would bug me to no end if I don’t.

I like the way they tied the existence of a clay Stone Mason’s pipe from his childhood home that burned down when he was eight, as proof that he was a member of an organization that he didn’t join until 10 years later. I assumed that his father was probably the owner of the pipe, but they never strayed in that direction...

I do not believe his father Augustine was ever a Freemason. There could be hundreds of reasons for the pipe’s presence, the majority having NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with young George. Masonry did not really take off here until after Augustine’s death (he died in 1743). Although George joined before the French and Indian War, it was colonial exposure to the “Field Lodges” of Freemasonry of the British Army that spurred its growth here.

I missed it but sorry to hear that even George Washington has now become a victim of PC rewriting history.
Did they mention that his last will and testament freed his slaves?

Lord help us if someone doesn’t try to rename our nation’s capitol “Obama DC”

Yes they did, but even here they could not let it go at that, but said that he freed his slaves in his will only to enhance his place in history.

“sorry to hear that even George Washington has now become a victim of PC rewriting history.”

Oh come on! Where have you been? GW is 1 of the most hated figures, if for nothing else than because “he owned slaves!!!!”

He is 1 who has been so raked over as to make him “real” and “not so great”, etc.; just another 1 of those “dead white guys” who was really and truly evil at heart. Because the US sucks and most definitely the men who created it sucked big time!

Yes, he was “just a man”, per se, but what a man. Not 1 of the non-slave-owning scum in Congress today could hold a candle to him.

Good critique. I suggest you send it to National Geographic.

When I saw them tearing him down, I changed the channel. It looked like one of those LEFTIST documentaries were they take great joy in embellishing their dislike of him to “change history”. No thanks. We passed.

“The General was ALWAYS very interested in the ladies (although VERY proper), ...”

That doesn't mean they can't have him BI-SEXUAL or a transvestite that loved to dress in women's clothes. After all in those days it was shameful. We might be lead to feel bad that he had to HIDE this perversion. Whereas today they are PROUD and “in your face” about their gender crisis.

LOL!

TOday anything can be rationalized that is perverted.

You did the right thing. Pol Pot would have gotten better treatment...every day gives me yet MORE reasons to hate the media.

The difference between the way Mount Vernon is today ,thanks to the Mount Vernon Ladies Assoc, and the way it would be run if the National Park Service ran it should be noted.

The grounds and museums are first rate. The guides are well informed and best of all is the fact that God has not been left by the wayside.

If it has been more than 10 years since you last visited...go back.. We spent 5 hours there and could have stayed much longer.

History channel had some blurb during the american revolution series where they IMPLIED something with the valet who rode with him (a/k/a the second best rider in the colonies, with GW being the best)

EXCELLENT comments.

I gave up long ago on anybody in the Democrat media - - including National Geographic - - ever giving decent, patriotic Americans, or America itself, a fair shake. They do not like America and what it stands for, and never will. The sick bastards.

Political correctness among the cretins of the left is now fully embedded. You can count on them rewriting history until a hundred or two hundred years from now Neil Armstrong is portrayed by some future National Geographic “documentary” as looking like and having the same multi-racial ethnicity as Tiger Woods.

I would put NOTHING past these propagandists...NOTHING!

And allow me here to expand on my statement about The General and the ladies...

Although morals were considerably looser in the 18th century than the 19th (especially at time of war), all the evidence we have is that he was true to Martha. What he DID do, however, was dance! He was often the last one to leave the parties during the war and would dance with many of the officer's wives late into the night.

Thanks for your excellent epilogue. I missed the show (was out last evening) and now I’m glad I did.

My dad grew up just a smidge east of Fredericksburg, smack dab between Ferry Farm and Pope’s Creek where GW was born. Every summer we’d visit the relatives and there was always time to bring us kids to historic places and instill a love of history by making it something real and tangible for us.

What they will LIKELY do, however, is point out that the Ferry Farm had slaves.

It's relevant, and should be pointed out. Washington owned slaves at Mt. Vernon as well. He freed his slaves in his last will and testament.

Thanks for the info.!

it’s not your fault that Natgeo is to the left.

It’s a shame.

No problem with them doing that, but a bit of context might have been a good idea along with the differences in how Washington (compared to many other slave owners) thought of Aficans and treated his slaves. Believe me, he was much more humane and did NOT believe that Africans were sub-human, which was the standard belief at that time.

I was fortunate to visit Mt. Vernon 3 years ago. It was an eye-opening experience and I’m so grateful to the Ladies who preserve for generations to come.

My ultimate admiration goes to John and Abigail Adams, who walked the talk. No slaves. They and family tended their property.
