I watched the memorial service for Madelyn Dunham last night and as it was ending the Mistress of Ceremonies made a rather odd statement along the lines of, “Madelyn took her responsibilities to heart, along with her job, she also raised these two native children of these islands...” Considering that Maya was born in Jakarta, Indonesia that is a more than odd statement to make.

I missed that. I assume Obama was there to honor the woman who raised him as her own?

I would say that the memorial service was organized for the benefit of Madelyn’s friends and former co-workers at Bankoh. Speakers for the most part were from Bankoh or Escrow companies while the minister was from Punahou. The Mistress of Ceremonies read a prepared statement from Jr and Maya and I found it curious that she made the statement she did about “...these two native children of these islands.” considering she was reading from prepared remarks. There may be parts of the ceremony still available from “The Honolulu Advertiser” website.
