doggie ping at you...
OR live in, say, southern Texas or Arizona.
Instinctually, the dog will understand why it has to come back inside where it’s safe.
Unless the dog in question is Rummy. He would beg to go out in Texas spring storms. Dear hubby opened the back door once for him to show him that he didn’t want to go out in the downpour, and off he went...to stand in the middle of the yard. It’s either the water retriever in him, the blond in him or he’s just too dumb to come in out of the rain! He does wait to come in before shaking though!!!!! :P
Our dogs get to do their “weather check” once I boot them out the door.If it’s raining or too cold, they better do their business with a sense of urgency.
I live in southern CA. My 3 big boxers are afraid of the rain and wind. They just hold it!
My dogs never come into the house.
My two black Labs lives outside where they roam the farmsite (two chihuahuas stay inside). When I got the first Lab I renovated an old granary. I lowered the ceiling, completely insulated the room and ran power out to it and installed a milk barn heater and heated water dish and heated dog bed. The dang dog preferred to stay outside regardless if the temperature -20 or colder. He would usually sleep up on the deck. And, he continues to jump into my pond up until it freezes over.
I don’t worry about my Dobie and weather for the most part. My theory is he wouldn’t do well if had to stay outside on cold days. However walking or running, he’s generating enough heat where he can handle the cold.
Of course he hates the rain (like today) but life ain’t always easy for dogs as well as humans.
We went to visit my daughter in Indiana for Christmas several years ago, and they had had a huge snowfall just before we arrived. We brought our dachsund with us, and she would not go outside on her own to do her business. My husband had to carry her outside, and her little legs were so short, that her belly just sank in the snow. She was not a happy camper.
I lost my dog Sophie this past August, after 13 years. She loved all forms of water.
for later
No thanks.
Last month my old dog passed away. He was over 11 years. So many Freepers were so kind when I posted about him that I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that I am in love!!!! I work at Petco and we had an adoption week-end. I picked up one of the dogs that was available and my heart melted. She is a 3 year old rat terrier. She was at the dog pound for over a month. They had taken her to many adoption days with no success. She was so quiet in the pound that they thought she had been de-barked. She promptly told off my neighbors GSD the next morning. She is beautiful and fits perfectly in that hole in my heart that my Bruce left. I am blessed and grateful.
With one exception, every dog I’ve known LOVED diving into snow. I foster momed a young border collie years ago. The one snow she experienced, she went as far as four feet to pee right on the deck, then immediately wanted back in. Beat everything I ever saw to see such a prissy dog, LOL!
My labs have been indifferent to rain, but the boxer mix doesn’t like it hitting her eyes. We have a deal that I step out under the eaves in a fedora so she can come back in as soon as she’s taken care of business.
There are days I truly miss my old collie. She was trained to shake off on the porch instead of right in front of my puter.
