Like the sun rising. So many jobs that currently make up the numbers are in specialty retail and other service industries that were all spurred into existence by the large amount of disposable income generated after Regan fixed the economy 25 years ago. Those days are coming to a close, and with it goes 5.00 coffee, big box electronics and the ability to support 20 different fast food places. That is a hell of a lot of jobs.

He did say he’d fix the economy.

It looks like it’s “fixed”, alright.

Fixed like the cat.

This latest thing with USPS is just a part of the picture. They had well over 800,000 employees just 5 years ago. This will take them to nearly 600,000.

Mail volume over that period is up, number of deliveries is up too (more houses for one thing), but PRODUCTIVITY DUE TO AUTOMATION is way up.

Jobs weren't shipped overseas.

Democrats have demonstrated themselves incapable of dealing with automation, productivity improvement, and deflation. This postal employment disaster has all three elements. I expect the Democrat elite to intervene at some point

I'm in industrial construction & heavy maintenance. Our primary customers are the refineries and chemical plants. We're already seeing big signs of them pulling back on capital work and expansion. When the oil companies sneeze, we catch the flu. The trickle down effect is huge as the oil and chemical companies are one of the few first level producers of goods left in the USA.

"The USPS is laying off 40,000 workers but said customers will not notice."

There is a very good possibility that nobody will notice.

Many years ago I worked for the State of WV. Every time the legislature didn't pass a budget on time, they had a statewide lay-off which usually lasted only a month or so. The ONLY people who noticed were the ones laid off without any paycheck as the work was always done by a limited number of employees and the rest were simply padding the payroll.

where are these banks going to be making money “going forward”?

That’s easy: borrow money from the Fed at 1% and use that to buy TBills at 3.9%

I don’t think they will be doing all that much of that. They will do some, but not too much, otherwise the demand for Tbills will drive the rate lower.

Actually, the effective Fed Funds Rates has been at .23 for several days. So the banks can simply hang onto their money and the Fed will pay them interest on their reserves parked at the Fed. (one of the most asinine, bonehead moves of all time, amounting, yet again, to another giant taxpayer subsidy for the banks)

There are just too many moving parts in this machine to make reasoned forecasts. IMO we’re headed into a Japan-type situation, and ST rates will probably decline further; to very little effect.

Good thing we have 0bama and Jamie Gorelick to straighten things out. Yuk. Horrible.

I like how nobody is mentioning the “Obama Effect” as the stockmarket loses nearly 1000 points since election day...

Reuters: Wall Street slides on economic, profit worry...

Now if the stock market were up 1000 points they would be tripping over themselves to give credit to the Obamunist in chief.

The national debt is now over $11 trillion with no end in sight. Wait until Obama starts spending money we don’t have on top of that.

Yep. Our national debt level is completely out of control now. Obama cannot raise net tax revenue in a rapidly slowing economy. No way to stop the run away freight train short of the confiscation of the publics assets. At that point we will be in full blown depression. Some think were have already entered depression. The Financial Bank and the Auto Manufacture sectors sure feel that we are in a depression now.

Don't know if it will be biblical, but it will be catastrophic. We are looking at another historically cold winter with historic levels of snow. Buildings will be collapsing again and people will be freezing to death. While that is occurring the leftists fools running the UN and DC will be trying to cool the planet even more as they attempt to stop global warming. And on top of that we have to add the contrived financial catastrophe and the resurgence of barbaric Russia. Clearly if ever a civilization needed a judgment rendered, this one should be a prime example.
