Gov. Deval Patrick is planning to dismantle the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority to improve efficiency and try to mollify public complaints about planned toll hikes, two government officials said Monday.

According to the plan, tolls likely will be raised inside Route 128 to pay off debt associated with Big Dig. Toll booths outside Route 128 will be eliminated, except in West Stockbridge near the New York border and in Sturbridge, close to the Connecticut border.

Not that I like tolls, don’t get me wrong...but the East/West travelers have been paying through the nose for decades and the North/South travelers get a pass. The North/South route through Boston is most of the big dig and these commuters never forked over any dough.
From exit 1 to exit 6 the truck drivers still have to pay the tolls now- and they’re hefty. I’m surprised they aren’t talking about keeping the RT 91 and RT 495 tolls [just for the trucks]those are big corridors.
We mostly only pay tolls when we’re traveling to visit family down South, or into Boston to pick up family at Logan. Thankfully that only happens a few times a year. We don’t go into the city that often, just for the heck of it, and when we go visit our son in Somerville, we go up Rt. 128 to Rt. 2, so we don’t even get on the Pike.
